That sort of happened to my wife and me. We went to our bank to inquire about a car loan (to see if we could get better than at a dealer. We probably looked younger than we were - and for some reason we were treated quite poorly for the first part of the meeting. The guy clearly had no intent of offering us much of anything...until he checked our credit report (which was quite good). He comes back with 4 sodas for us to choose from and a loan offer for almost any car we could reasonably want. We definitely didn't take him up on it!

no, I dont think he meant anything like that , but we are on a topoc of Discrimination, and I dont think that in "life " it is a "good choice" to get lots of tattoos wear clothing that begs to be leered at and go skulking around toy stores , if you do hen suffer what happens for it , its not like they called the cops or anything, it is way too vague to make any judgements on the situation, maybe a "normal" mom saw him and didnt want her little boy growing up to look like him so she ask the store to "keep an eye" on him I dont know I wasnt there,'
but on a side note I have seen many posts where ppl are posting thast they dont see kids buying joes............maybe this is a big part! tattooed curb creatures wondering the rows preventing little joey from his precious wild bill figure.....now we know who to blame! |

You said it well. Looks don't necessarily mean anything, but you understand the expecation that comes with a particular look, right or wrong, and you deal with it because you'd rather deal with it than change it. The OP seems to want others to change without him having to.
If you want to change perception, great. Don't expect people to change their perception though, work to change it for them. That's all I'm trying to say. |

Why? Because I am in a toy store wearing a punk rock shirt and have tattoos? Because I am going through all the toys, digging through them to find the one I want (and then putting them back)? .

If any employee holds you by either asking you to stay here a minute or physically grabs you and you do not have something stolen on your, it is Illegal Seizure and a whole lotta legal trouble.
I worked with mall security before and was told that all I can do is tell someone to leave. I cannot under ANY circumstance apprehend anyone. That is for the police only. If you have proof (video, security alert), then you can have them detained until police arrive and let them sort it out. My wife worked at walmart for a brief stint and the loss prevention video says the exact thing. DO NOT APPROACH SHOPLIFTERS! They are deadset on this. All they are told to do is call police and let them catch them out front. You could literally grab something off the shelf, walk out the door and they won't stop you. This is why there are police present around the holidays due to the traffic, and they CAN stop you. Another reason why walmart doesn't give 2 shits about people swapping out stuff, nothing they can do but throw it away. Not true If you are trained and the company insured for it, security can detain and arrest you. Case in point, about 2 or so months after we went that route at the mall, I quit. We were trained and authorized to arrest and handcuff people. all for $9.50 an hour ( and that was the HIGH end of the pay scale). Mind you now, you have to give a whole list of commands and follow through with actions. You also have to have just cause. For us, it usually revolved around an infraction of the code of conduct and escalated from there. If you found yourself in a situation that got out of control, you were trained to warn the person three times to stop what they were doing before they were maced. That usually involved some sort of physical altercation. They talked about guns after that so I KNEW I had to get out of there. |

It should not matter what you look like. If you did not take anything you have the right to shop in the store without being singled out. I would have told them to back the ---- off. Then I would have called 1800 Toys r us and complained about the store and its staff and the way I was treated. Make sure to always get the store # and the names of the workers that followed you. I had to do it to a Tru store manager. He told me he would not pull items from the back for me. He told me he was sick of collecters like me asking him for -hit!

Reason being, if someone was stealing a DVD player and started walking out, a manager reaching out and grabbing the thief would cause the thief to go crazy, whip out a gun and start shooting up the place. Then, all the victims could sue the chain for creating an unsafe environment. Better safe to lose a cheap ass DVD player than millions of dollars and/or life. |
