I look really, really seedy and suspect. I've never shoplifted. Will never shoplift. I think I need to start carrying my BFA (with full transcripts to show that I graduated with 3.5 gpa), recent tax returns, listing of charitable donations, picture of the child that I sponsor, and perhaps a picture of my extended family... just in case I get hassled. And perhaps a pic or 2 of my collection, with me in it just to prove that it is mine and not just a stolen pic...

Why would a shoplifter want to draw attention to him or herself by sporting a huge pink mohawk?

Exactly... It is practically a mathematical formula. The more shady you look, the more you will be suspected of something. Knowing that, the more rule and law abiding you must be. (whether this gets followed by the individual is another thing. But the first time you get hassled just for looking a certain way, regardless of what you have or have not done, the more careful you are not to draw unwanted attention...) almost an oxymoron formula really. |

In the wintertime especially. I have hair down to my navel, a big beard, a stocking cap, a beat up firefighter's coat and tanker boots. It is done for warmth. But I know I look seedy and I'll be the first one to admit it. I'd be the last one to start anything and the first to help out... I just don't look that way. It has advantages and disadvantages. But I'm old and don't really care.

delta,
I am not sure why you ask these questions, maybe it is to lead me into making a off color remark, or to make me explain in detail how our society works, but either way it is societys point of view that ppl who get lots of tattooes, wear dirty clothes, punk rock attire and generally live a "punk rock" lifestyle are not of the "normal" mainstream , lets just face it, most real punk rockers have a skewed sense of the "anarchy concept" damn the man ect.. so it lowers thier moral stand point on things like shoplifting , stealing ect. also most real punk rockers are not wealthy (I have never seen one on forbes) so that being saidit is more likely they will shoplift. as for seedy it is not really that difficult to spot out the seedy element a better definition ..... " seamy: morally degraded; "a seedy district"; "the seamy side of life"; "sleazy" so if a 25 yr old man came into my store with torn jeans, metalica shirt, long hair, and old dirty sneakers and acting like he was suspect I would treat him the same as a 15 yr old skater kid who appeared to have money, or a 20 yr old punk rocker with tattoes up and down, because they all fit a profile that they are both likely to steal, be it for different reasons, I am not saying because you dress this way you are a thief, what I am saying is ppl who steal do dress like this......... |

Don't forget celebrities. They also shoplift at an alarming rate. (I've got my eye on you Winona Ryder!)
