wouldn't 40+ be more like middle age? Mid 30s seems a bit young for that.

I've thought about this some more and the OP might be on the right track with respect to some of the classifications. People are living a lot longer these days. Many folks will live well into their 70's and 80's. So if we assume most folks will live somewhere between 60 and 80 years, we could say:
0-10 = Child 11-19 = Teenager 20-29 = Adult 30-49 = Middle aged 50-59 = Mature adult 60-69 = Senior citizen 70+ = Elderly adult Middle aged is nothing more than the mid-point of a person's expected life. That's a big improvement over a few hundred years ago when middle aged would have probably been somewhere around 15-25. |
