Well, I'm in California here and I know alot of Tankers are too. And as of July of this year, anyone with a cell phone MUST have a hands free device (bluetooth, headset). Well, in August I was ticketed for this. I had a bluetooth which the battery was dead, and I was using the phone, but I had it on speakerphone. Even though I did not have it near my ear, I was pulled and ticketed. The damn thing cost me near $100 bucks.
So, my real complaint is to ALL the police officers out there that abuse this law. All month long I see police officers on their damn cell phones, with the phone up to the ear. Absolute and utter BULLSH**. I wonder if there is anything that can be done about this, or if it is worth the time to report this. I wouldn't even trip if I didn't get ticketed, but since I did and lost about $100 that could of gone to Joes, I'm pissed and something WILL be said! And to the police officers that do this. If I see ya....SAY CHEESE!!!, cause I'll photo your ass and send it in. Don't give a shit if it doesnt't do a damn thing either. So, sorry about that, but had to vent. |

Regardless, hands free or not, it's unsafe to drive while using a cell phone. Studies are coming out now showing there is no difference between the two. Neither method is safe, and you're still four times more likely to get into an accident. Those things should be banned while driving. Period. But yeah: cops can be hypocritical. There's just not much you can do about it. |

I think the whole thing about cell phones and driving is bull. Even when I'm not talking on my phone, I drive with one hand. Talking on your cell phone is the same thing to me as talking to someone in the passenger seat. If you can't drive a car without wrecking because of something so small and stupid, I feel sorry for you.
My opinion is that if you get into an accident because of your cell phone, you're probably an idiot in the first place and shouldn't be driving. As Dennis Leary said, "Life sucks, wear a ****ing helmet." But as far as taking a photo of cops doing the same thing, it won't help. I hate it when cops abuse speed limits, but no one's ever going to do anything about that either. I just hate hypocrites. |

So when do they write tickets for listening to the radio? Smoking? When will the New World Order take hold of us all?

I can understand the no texting while driving because your attention is diverted from the road, even when you dial the phone number, your attention is diverted. but hands free talking? Like previously said, that's like talking to a passenger in the car. But then again, this is California, the same people that made it illegal to smoke in a bar |

My opinion is that if you get into an accident because of your cell phone, you're probably an idiot in the first place and shouldn't be driving. And even if you are an amazing driver, that doesn't necessarily mean everyone else is. While you may be completely capable of talking while driving, there are more than plenty of others who can barely drive, let alone talk at the same time, and I find incompetence to be part of the majority. That's who you have to watch out for. You may not hit anyone, but someone may run into you or a loved one, or cause an accident that effects you. So in your own best interest, risk reduction is key, and that means no cell phones while driving for everyone, cause you can't selectively apply laws to certain people. It's not about fairness or whether one activity is more risky than another; it's about risk reduction, and what is realistically enforceable. Last edited by pud333; 12-16-2008 at 08:40 PM.. |
