aaaaaahmen!
Quote:
The biggest mistake the UAW ever made in this area was to support a freeze on fuel efficiency. And because the government could not upgrade its fuel efficiency for over thirty years, from the 1975 standards, the Japanese and other foreign competitors were able to eat a large piece of the market share of the domestic industry. ... We hit a stone wall the moment that UAW allied itself with the auto companies and stopped any increase in fuel efficiency standards. That opened the door for the SUV gas-guzzlers, etc., and that differential that consumers saw between what foreign car companies were selling and what Detroit was selling.
Not against the strong unions that give people with little power a voice against people with big power, but the UAW has lost more jobs than they have saved under the current management.

I don't think I will comment on this anymore because there are too many emotional opinions without factual information being posted.........
It's no longer become a discussion. Opinions won't be changed because the information isn't being presented fairly. It's becoming political. I've often said that the auto manufacturers and the oil companies are in bed together. They have to be. When SUV's hit market saturation, meaning Ford, GM and Chrysler can't sell anymore SUV's, the fuel prices go through the roof! Then the auto manufacturers decide that they make fuel economic vehicles like hybrids? Now everyone wants or needs a new car.

We need replicators, Gene Rodenberry's world of star trek where war and money become absoelete will be a nice day. No more money, no more upset people, we can all sit aorund an dpick our noses singing along with John Lenon....
Until money goes away and wants and desires (like my wanting more joes) are put to an end, unless machines take over and destroy the world or the rapture ensures, we are all doomed! DOOMED I COMMAND! |

this whole conversation reminds me of a rule my editor in chief used to have when I worked as an opinion columnist. Rule #1: No articles on abortion, flag burning or religion. You will never change anybody's mind about these through a newspaper article, no matter how well argued or referenced.
I've enjoyed watching over all this and seeing an incredibly lengthy discussion go on without really a single personal attack. I honestly feel even though there is obviously some strong disagreement here, that people are taking the "respectfully disagree" or "i hear what you're saying, but we have a fundamental difference of opinions" approach. People are making some good arguments for both sides, but 174 posts later, has anybody changed their mind? Are we just debating to debate? dunno. I just wanted to say thanks for keeping the attacks and politics (as best as possible) out of this. I wouldn't be against closing this, calling it a "good debate" and moving on to other topics. Any thoughts?

Agreed. It is fun, but wheels are just spinning now. No pun intended.
Close it and let's get the next one.
