I'm on the fence. The main reason we have this problem is union greed. For example, when all benefits are figured in, an average worker at GM plant makes $74 an hour. An average worker at Toyota plant in the U.S. makes 46 and change per hour. And then congress has the F-king gall to harass the car companies?! We have to stop demonizing the auto execs, and put the blame where it belongs - greedy and corrupt union bosses and their pet politicians.
If you don't give the UAW goons 100/hour to put bolts on a wheel frame, then they threaten and enact a strike. If they go on strike, then the company doesn't have progress. Since the company doesn't have progress, then they are now using raw emotion in an effort to steal 14 billion from the US taxpayer. The little-known fact is that many a UAW goon makes a lot more money than the average American Joe, and the UAW goons don't work nearly as hard as most people in this country. Those of you who are asking American taxpayers to finance this UAW corruption are throwing MY and MY CHILDREN'S money into a fire. The GM retail and factory lots are already loaded with vehicles that people are not buying. Now you want to take 14 billion dollars away from people who work for a living and feed it to a dinosaur? Why is anyone advocating the UAW to take 14 billion dollars away from me and the next generation to subsidize and NATIONALIZE a dying company??? LET IT DIE! Stop stealing my taxpayer dollars and giving them to Tony Soprano and the other UAW/NEA gangsters. Sheesh. Last edited by 245am; 12-13-2008 at 11:21 AM.. Reason: no political talk |

Guys look at the big picture. Not only would millions working for the big three be at a loss for work, but also the thousands of suppliers and their employes who support these companies all over the US. Your talking about shutting down possibly 25% to 30% of the jobs in the US in one fell swoop. Then all of the townships that support these people along with those buisnesses would all fold up and so on and so on.
The end result would be a third world country with only rich and poor, no middle class The Free Market System would force GM, Ford and Chrysler to either merge or be purchased by larger corporations and be transformed into a more efficient system by the new management. The bailout would only achieve the following things: 1.) Create more wasteful spending at all levels since the taxpayer is financing the business now. 2.) Create more irresponsibility at all levels since the taxpayer is now financing the business. 3.) Create more bureaucracy and less creativity in product design when it is INSIGNIFICANT whether or not the consumer has an interest in the product. This is because the taxpayer is being held at gunpoint to finance the business, so it won't matter whether or not the product is even better than before. Americans are going to end up with Trabants and Ladas once the government takes over the auto industry. Do you honestly think that 14 billion taxpayer dollars in subsidies is really gonna work? Look at Amtrak if you want to research the absurdities of using MY taxpayer dollars to finance a dinosaur. Last edited by Bravestarr; 12-13-2008 at 08:27 AM.. |

Reluctantly, yes, because if it doesn't happen, it's a seriously damning issue to the WORLD economy, not just the U.S.

As soon as FDR stopped doling out the cash (in 1937, after the election) the economy crashed again. The stock market plummeted. Five years into the New Deal, in the winter of 1937-1938, two in 10 were again unemployed. The Welfare state program begins.
The Great Depression and New Deal, 1929-1939 PS... Preconditions to the UAW bailout should include: Firing of and/or cuts in union exececutive pay Absolute cessation of union spending on a certain political party's biased issues Agreement that "Card Check" will not be passed - Totally unconstitutional UAW plan. Nowhere else in America can you force your boss to give you so much time off. It's absurd to think that a company will maintain competitive progress with that level of inadequacy from its employees. |

Because nobody, particularly the oil companies, wanted fuel-efficient cars. The December 2007 energy bill that requires cars to have a minimum standard of 35 miles per gallon by the year 2020.The year 2020!? Europe has cars that get well over 40 mpg as we speak, and yet the current administration is calling for 35 mpg by 2020! It's outrageous.

Hey, isn't a bailout when you remove water from a sinking ship in order to slow down the sinking?
So if the auto industry is sinking, shouldn't it need a fix instead of a bailout? Wouldn't a bailout just prolong the collapse? Isn't this a political discussion? I thought HISSTANK was above this kind of talk? I'm so confused ;) God save America!!!
