My most heartfelt and sincere condolences. I dread the day I lose my mother. A person's mother is next to God in his or her heart. My mother is in her mid 50's so I feel I have plenty of time left, but when she's gone it will feel too soon no matter how old she may be. You were a strong person to make the decisions you made. Stay strong, brother.

Again, thanks to everyone for the condolences.
I'm doing OK. I know it's a cliche, but I keep thinking I need to call her and then remembering she's gone. I know this will run its course, though.
I'm going back to work on Monday. I had planned to go back after Thanksgiving, but I changed my mind because the same thing has happened/is happening to two of my co-workers with whom I am friendly. One lost her mom last week and the other was in the process of moving her mom into Hospice care yesterday. Both of their mothers are/were like mine, elderly and not in good health, and the latter has been struggling with this for years (Alzheimer's if I'm not mistaken) and it looks like the end is about to come. I guess we will be the triumvirate of maternal death.
I am very grateful that Mom was pretty lucid up 'til the end. After she coded, the doctor said her EEG showed some brain damage and she never fully regained consciousness even when she was not sedated. She had always said she was ready to go when she lost command of her mind. There were a lot of women at the retirement home where she lived who were reasonably physically healthy but had a lot of cognitive problems because of age-related dementia, and she always said she never wanted to be like that.

Having your mom being alert and lucid until the end truly is a blessing. My grandfather suffered from dimensia for a few months before he passed, and that was so terribly hard for my dad and grandma.
Keep it as a reminder of how fragile life is, and while I don't want to get into religion, use this time to evaulate what you believe about why you're here, and what happens after death, and to make sure that you're true to that.
Barefoot, most others have said it better than I, but you have my prayers and my condolences.
