Last night my wife and I had dinner in a small mom-and-pop diner. It got us thinking. Our Americanized way of eating has got to stop. We just came back from Australia - and there are not all the fast food chains and crap there. We loved it. We ate in small cafes and bistros for three weeks. Felt great.
So, we are thinking of taking a challenge in 2010 - to give up eating at any restaurant that is a franchise or a chain. No fast food, no Donato's Pizza, no Texas Roadhouse, no O'Charley's... Eat at home more often - pack my lunch at work... Do you think its possible? Sounds hard, doesn't it? |

I've definitely noticed family-owned or small restaurants have much better food and service.
Taco Hell or McDunghill's isn't going to go out of business even if they treat thousands of patrons like crap and the food sucks. A smaller local place will, so they try a lot harder. I always try to pay in cash, too, when I go to non-chain restaurants. They appreciate that. I haven't cooked in nine years. I eat out every day, so I'm a restaurant expert.

You would be surprised how many good Mom and Pop's and Chef driven restaurants there are. This is very possible to do if you live in a larger city...
Funny you mention Australia, I was offered a VP of Culinary job for a new chain there last year but decided with the economy the way it was it was best not to take risks

Ever since I came back from The States I adapted myself to eat only at home. Cooking is actually fun for me and is a 100% more healthy. While I was over there I force myself to learn how to cook just because eating outside was expensive and I started to gain more than 20 pounds. Inexcusable. So I learn how to cook healthy and delicious nutritious meals. No junk food for a couple of months. Lost weight in a healthy way without even exercise other that your moderate walk.
So I think you can do it. By the way I don't want people to think when I say nutritious I'm saying just vegetables. I mean white meat red meat etc. Rice and beans. |

Go for it. It's not that difficult a challenge. I very rarely eat out, even though have a great little mom and pop place right across the street, just too expensive.
It's not that difficult to accomplish. Good luck. I hate cooking so you have to be careful. Some of the crap you buy at the grocery store is just as bad as that crap at the restaurants.

go for it bro, any "flavor" you find at a take-out place is the end result of WAY too much salt anyway. Eating at home is cheaper, saves time, and is way better on your families health. Since you posted this on a GI Joe site, look at it like this; every 6-8 bucks you spend eating out is one less Joe you could be buying which can 1. actually make you money down the road 2. you can give to your kid to play with or 3. just be a badass part of your collection anyway. Put the hamburger down!
