You all know by now that I'm planning to go to Japan next summer. However, I haven't told my family yet. I'm thinking I'll break it to them at Thanksgiving.
The problem is, my parents have expressed their worries about me going solo in a foreign country. I've told them time and again I've done ok navigating London solo. I know to take caution in dangerous cities (As I usually go around Chicago myself and take care not to get involved with questionable people), I'm learning Japanese, and I've acquainted myself with Japan through manga, video games, anime and the like. I've even put out an open invitation to friends of mine, although I'd have to put an itinerary up for that sort of stuff...which isn't done yet. So how do I tell them without them going crazy?

Show them you have a clear, concise plan and that you have a backup one should something go south. It's gotta be hard for parents to let their children go to another country, especially by themselves. Try to understand where they are coming from, and if they can do the same, you should be fine.

I find that the more prepared you are (ie. itinerary, research of the area, safety, contacts and contact info) the easier it is to really sell the idea to loved ones if there is concern.

How old are you? Japan isn't exactly a dangerous country... I've had friends that went there and told me they had a hell of a time. It's going to be an opportunity to see the world, experience a new culture, try new things, and absorb more that life has to offer. Your parents should be able to understand this.
Just tell them. You've got some time before the trip, so if they don't take to it right away, they'll adjust. |

I leave my door unlocked 90 percent of time without any worries. 6 year old kids walk to school still here without any worries. America is far more dangerous than Japan Im From Florida by the way |

As jamar stated above, Japan is really awesome. They have such a cool culture there that underhanded behavior just isn't acceptable. I know Tokyo has a fantastic public transportation system so I would imagine that is true in most Japanese cities. They only thing is that it is pretty expensive. So do everything to prepare yourself and show your family how cool Japan is and how well you have prepared yourself, and then just do it!

Yeah, as said by others, Japan is incredibly safe for foreigners. Obviously you should be smart and not pick fights with gangsters in Kabuki-cho or anything, but honestly Japan is probably the least hostile nation you could possibly choose to visit. Way safer than the U.K. If you stick to the major cities like Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto, the language barrier won't even be an issue as almost everyone studies English in school and retains some basic knowledge of the language (and is accustomed to dealing with foreigners). Mass transit in Japan is fast, widespread and reliable, and large cities use multilingual signs to help visitors get about. I've been there half a dozen times with only rudimentary knowledge of the language and get along just fine. Really, the most important consideration while you're there is not to make a nuisance of yourself. Your parents should be fine with it -- you'll be seeing a new part of the world at little risk to yourself.
