Lived with my parents up in PA until 20 when I graduated college (luckily close enough to commute, especially for my wallet - no loans). Been out since then. Rented for 6 years and have owned for 7 years (townhouse first, then a detached) now. Looks like my parents might move in with us (me, the wife, three kids) when they retire next year, until we can find a place for them down here in VA.
I think what hasn't been defined here is the stereotype: Lazy 25-40 year old living in the basement of an enabling/overcompensating mom and (step)dad because he has no ambition and no reason to leave when everything is given to him at home. Maybe this guy has some college, but was too lazy/irresponsible to follow through and graduate. Hasn't the common sense to bath regularly, wears the same dated t-shirts and sweat pants/jeans (clean or dirty - "mom, where's my laundry?") for weeks on end and then wonders why girls are completely repulsed by him, his situation. Gets fat on Doritos, Twinkies and (sometimes diet) Pepsi. Spends his days/nights surfing the net, playing video games, watching the extended version of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, blogging with similar guys around the country. Goes to his part time job at Blockbuster, Best Buy, Walmart or Pizza Hut, until he gets fired for oversleeping (again). You get the picture. There's a big difference between that and somebody who has done their best, finished college/military/trade school, etc, started their life independently, but was then broad-sided by some unforseen crisis (job, economic, relational, weather, etc.) and was knocked off his feet and just needs some time to get back on track. I don't think anybody here would fault somebody who was actually trying to do it right. So lets clarify that and not confuse the issue. Sorry for the long post. I just wanted to put that out there so the wrong people aren't getting lumped together. |

I reside in the mother and fathers basement.... I get about 400 qw feet and rent in only $100 a month... And I have a shop for my cars and a parking out side for them too!
I dont really care what people think, it cheap rent and lots of space...

I'm 25 and own my home with my fiancee in Memphis, Tn. Ironically enough, when my mother got divorced she came and lived at my house for about 6 months. Currently, I have an apartment in AZ as well. I need it while I am out here working as a engineer on a Hospital being built in Ironwood. I miss my house.

but its true like someone said in a post up above, I know lots of people from there 20's to there late 30's who had to move back home cause of economic or divorced ! it happens, but thats also why were blessed with parents. Just like my daughter, no matter what her age , she will always be welcomed back home for un seen reasons that life throws at us! If there lazy thats a whole different story, but life is getting hardder and many I know are heading back home, even as couples. lets be thankful we got great parents that help when in need. I dont look down at anyone who has to move back in or still at home for these reasons . but like I said if the person is just lazy and wants everything handed to them and takes advantage of there parent , then thats a whole different story, no respect for that kind of person.

ive lived on my own . lived in fellow students pads. lived with girlfriends. ( paying my share for all the above). but when my wife got marries an for a few months was re-living at my moms place.. well theres no place like home. if you dont have to be on your own. an you dont mind lack of immediate privacy stay home for as long as you can.
Your parents will miss you no matter how they denied it. anyway until the cali housing market settles a lil bit more, were living in a nice size apartment ( 950 sq ft)!!!! |
