I'm actually very excited about St. Louis and Marleau being there. Not as much as Big Joe being named Captain for the West. It'll be interesting to see Marty out there but I'm afraid this may only highlight how much his play depends on Lecavalier's greatness.

You realize Vinny skating in Montreal is just the precursor to the imminent trade... Vinny LeCavalier for Alexei Kovalev... They're both All Star forwards... right? And Alex is a starter so Tampa gets the better end of that deal...

In French, since I'm such the Habs fan:
Ne grincez pas vos dents tellement dur. Elles se casseront. I know the idea of Vinny going to Monteal grinds you... That's why I enjoy those rumors so much. |

i can't disagree with the result as Ovie definitely put on the best show. You'd almost think he'd be great to represent the NHL.....
anyways I like Kovalovs performance as well but then again I'm a soccer guy as well. oh yeah, Stamkos pawned the youngstars game |

Since I was bemoaning it before, I feel I owe the ASG a decent review. Overall, I'd rate the All Star Weekend as a solid 7 out of 10.
Skills competition: (the parts I watched) - 6 of 10. I got bored late during the Young Stars game and left to go play games at the arcade in the resort I was staying in. So I missed everything after that game Saturday night. The 60 sec. Breakaway challenge thing was okay, although it didn't live up to the billing. At least Ovie was kinda fun to watch (with the helper from Malkin... surprise). I was pretty underwhelmed how many times the stars participating couldn't pull off their tricks well enough to even get a shot off. It was definitely missing Datsyuk, who (arguably) has the best hands in the game right now. Young Stars game: 5 of 10. It was a complete yawner for me. I am not a big fan of "oh, he's gonna be great someday" hockey. Plus, Versus' coverage was terrible. I know they failed to broadcast at least 2 of the goals in that game because they were showing highlights from the previous missed attempt or fixating on some player on the bench. Ugh. Terrible. Performances at the opening, before the games, between periods: 6 of 10. You never expect much from these, but some of that stuff, I was like, "Really...? Really, NHL, that's what you got for your big ASG, huh?" and blushed a little. I guess some of those artists are popular up in Canada, maybe? I don't know. Some of it even made it onto the ridicule rant on Sports Soup after the game. Really, really cheesy. The actual ASG: 9 of 10. This is the only part that pleasantly surprised me of the weekend. It was actually a pretty good game for an ASG. A big comeback, lots of lead changes, a penalty, great goaltending (Tim Thomas mainly) at times, overtime and a shootout. I actually had fun watching it all the way through. There was no defense to speak of most of the game, but hey, at least those "softer" players got to have a little fun and get on the scoreboard. And the coverage by Versus was somewhat better than it was for the Young Stars game. Players that impressed: Malkin's through the legs goal during the ASG. Kovalev's still got some of the best tricks around (when there's no defense ) Ovechkin looked great. I think the coaches should have played him more though. Of course when the coaches are from Boston and Montreal, you think they wanna see how truly awesome he is prior to having to face him the rest of the season and in the playoffs? He should have been on the first line and been on the ice a lot more. If they would have played him 50% more (his normal minutes with the Caps), I know he would have at least gotten a hat trick plus his assists. Marleau looked strong. If there is any question about his decline before this season, you only have to look as far as Ron Wilson. Marleau is totally back in form now. Teows and Kane looked pretty lethal as well. Chicago has a lot to look forward to when these guys start to really peak over the next few years. St. Louis always looks good when there are no big defenders knocking him down. I think he was fired up playing in Montreal as well. Players that didn't: Paging Misters LaCavalier and Thorton... Were they in the building last night? At least each team had one MIA so it was even. I was really expecting both of them to participate a bit more. I will have to look them up to see if they at least had assists. They certainly didn't get much camera time. |
