I think you're giving Don Cherry too much credit. If I were Crusty and Homer, I'd take offense to that comment.

Being the dumb American hockey fan that I am, can somebody tell me what in the world Don Cherry has ever done to get the kind of attention related seemingly to all things hockey that he does up north??? I mean they treat him like he is this great hockey name and this great hockey brain. What accomplishments has he ever had besides brutalizing all things fashion for decades now?

I figured his longevity was due to a good sound bite from time to time, like Bret Hull or Jeremy Roenick to a much lesser extent. I remember wondering a few years ago why he was still around. Now, it seems like he has magically turned into this great hockey icon. Everything he says about this player or that is like a decree from the Pope of Hockey or something. I don't know how someone who dresses like he does gets anywhere near hockey without getting his ass kicked. Then ESPN has him as part of their Stanley Cup coverage so that the casual sports fan can think hockey is that much more of joke than he already thought. I'm with you. I don't get it. The guy is like a living cartoon. I've seen Coach's Corner a few times throughout the years and its never been worth my time. Its like watching the two old men from the Muppets, except the one guys doesn't get to talk really. Just a lot of hot air. Just another reason for Minnesotans to make fun of the neighbors on our northern border.

coaches corner on hockey night in Canada is about it. it certainly wasn't his playing career or even worse, his coaching career. my theory; it's probably because he is one of the few in hockey (or in general) who actually speaks his mind and isn't filtered. I'm 50/50 on the dude. I agree with him sometimes and sometimes not. I like to watch him for the same reasons I watch Glen Beck, just for a load of batshit crazy.

To go back a few posts - I'm Canadian, and I don't get why Cherry holds his job.
He's pedantic and tiresome to the point that I change the channel to a chick flick rather than watch him. (well, maybe not that bad....maybe.) |
