On Monday I went to my local Target on my lunch hour hoping to get my Target Exclusive Conquest and Rattler. I entered the Toy aisle and sure enough there was one of each vehicle sitting on the shelf. I picked both of them up and was leaving the department when one of the Guest Associates stopped me and asked me to leave one of them behind. I asked the lady why and she said 'because I just got off the phone with a customer and told them I was going to hold both of them at the service desk, so I need to hold at least one, so I Need you to pick one of them." Confused by this and wanting to get back to work, I told her that this was stupid and gave her the Conquest, cuz I assumed the customer wanted the Rattler. So she walked away with my Rattler and I went to check out crushed, embarrased and insulted. The cashier asked me if I found everything all right and I told her no, briefly explained what happened, pointed at the associate that was putting the rattler behind the desk and in the ensuing conversation rang the Conquest up twice.
I paid for my transaction and left the store. As I proceed thru the multi-million dollar construction project in front of the the store, I felt that what happened was wrong and proceeded to call the Store Manager. I was shocked to look at my receipt and sure enough saw that I was charged double. So while talking with the Store Mgr I informed him of being charged double but focused on my experience with this associate. I told him how the associate was in the wrong, and since it was a Store Exclusive i thought that they had strict policies of no phone calls, no checking the back rooms and as little customer service as possible so everyone had an equal shot at the exclusives. The mgr infomred me he would look into the situation and to come back so I could get my receipt adjusted which I did. Problem. The Mgr never got my name and phone number to follow up or follow any principles of customer service. Believe me I have fifteen years of customer service experience from retail to government, I could teach workshops on the dos and donts. So sharing my experience with my buddies on here, they encouraged me to follow up with Corporate after one of them was so outraged that after he spoke with the store Manager he even felt that the store was brushing both of us off. So today I spoke with Lindy a very nice Target Guest Relations Supervisor about my experience and she concluded that my local Target store was in the wrong, they should have gotten my information to contact me and provide closure to the situation and would address this situation with the District Office and the Store Training Lead so that all employees at the store can avoid this situation. She was also kind enough to have the Store Manager locate another Rattler and have it shipped to that store so today, on my lunch hour I am the proud owner of my very first Rattler. That's right. I never had one growing up and can't wait to rip this baby open. So it pays to follow through with customer service complaints, being civil and holding the store accountable for all the stupid customer service principles that they choose to ignore because they can. BTW Mr Focus and GI Eddie, I owe you guys a drink. Thanks *Beast wars ravage's voice* 26th Forever! |

I am usually very nice, but I think I would have refused to part with either of them if the boxes were already in my hands. To tell a customer who is about to buy something they can't buy it because it's being "held" for another customer when it was on the sales floor??? That is the most ludicrous thing I have heard in a never-ending stream of Target horror stories. I guess I could understand it more if they'd been in the stockroom or behind the counter, but it seems once something is on the sales floor it is fair game and once it's in a customer's hands or shopping cart with intent-to-purchase, it goes to that person. They got there first.
I usually let things go, but I do think in that case I would have created a scene. That just seems very wrong to me. Last edited by Barefoot Jedi; 09-20-2008 at 04:52 AM.. |

You were very nice and level-headed, so for that you deserve a lot of credit. I'm not a jerk, but just like Jedi said, that situation would've ended when she asked me to choose just one. I would've kindly told her, "Sorry, first come, first served." And strolled up to the checkout counter. But in the end, you got what you were looking for, so that's cool.

Glad you received closure and got what you deserved in the end.
But as others have said. I would never have given one back to the associate to begin with, and if they an issue with it tough shit. |

What a story. Glad to hear it worked out for you. Staying level headed was a good choice. They should never have made you "choose one". By the associate doing this, they messed over both you and the person it was being held for. They should have went to the floor and grabbed them, that way there would be no confusion. Had a couple of bad experiences at target myself, but I have had a few good ones as well. Really depends on the store you go to.

Sorry to hear about your situation. That sucks, but at least someone came through for you. I have had great CS from my Target so far but that is what you get from a semi-small town. And by the way, I would have told them to kiss my @$$, I hate sucky customer service I have spent 23 years in the CS line of work.

Your story reminds me of a situation with my mom. She had gone to the store to buy me and my two brothers the orriginal 12" Darth Vader. She was walking up to the register when a woman complained that my mom had three of them and the associate told my mom she had to give one to the other lady. So instead of the store selling all three right there my mom walked out and the lady bought one. @$$h011es are sometimes nice people who have been walked on too many times by pushy people.
