Second-relax, its a great experience and it is life altering as they get. You wont believe how much you love this little baby that you have been waiting 9 months to see. NOT TO SCARE YOU I would suggest that you have plan B in place-check out the NICU just in case and what is the protocol for sending her to a specialized hospital just in case something goes wrong. Dont get me wrong, Im not trying to scare you, I just want you prepared. My first daughter was a meconium aspirate baby--basically she pooped inside the belly and it mixed with amniotic fluid and she breathed it in. That is not good. While my daughter had to be intubated, that was fine, it was helping her to breath, the head pediatric intensivist was dicking around for 6 hours not doing his all for my daughter. She was transferred to Newark Beth and they are an amazing group of people. Dont get caught without knowing the plan, you will feel much better knowing the plan of action and knowing IS half the battle.
Put the baby on a feeding and sleeping schedule as soon as possible. If your wife is breastfeeding (which is the best, makes for a strong immune system for the baby). Learn how to suck out the baby's nose and how to take a temperature and medicate with infant tylenol-its the safest, they survived birth, they are tough.
If you ever lose your temper due to a crying baby, remember this a crying baby is one that is breathing. I have dealt with some hard stuff in the ER, I will take a crying baby over a blue dead baby any day. Yes it is that simple. Get your head on right and do right by the baby, if you get angry, find someone to take care of the baby and find someplace to go calm down or talk to someone.
Ever wonder how a guy can jump on a grenade and give up his own life for his buds? its like that with the baby, you will do ANYTHING to make sure no harm comes to this one, even her getting shots at the doc's office will make you feel bad. Your daughter will look to you for everything, if you are nervous and upset, guess what? She takes her cues from you.
My daughter just learned how to speak at the age of 3, we went outside in the morning and it was foggy and she asked me "Daddy, where did all the color go?"---amazing. A child's mind is literal. If she says she sees something, try and find it, Im sure you will.
I know its more than 2 cents, but I like parents that have a clue. You dont have to know everything, just the basics. It is a learn as you go, have a great time.

You will be fine. It is a difficult job but also something you will adjust to faster than you may expect (including the lack of good sleep). The first week or so is a bit tough getting used to the new situation, and the profound sense of responsibility, but that is normal. If you have family nearby to help, it is very valuable.
The time goes by fast too. My daughter is almost 2 now and I can't believe how fast it has gone. When they are very little there isn't a whole lot of interaction since they mostly want to eat and sleep, but before long they are interacting and are increasingly aware of things.
As mentioned, childbirth is nothing like the movies. It's about the farthest thing from glamourous you can get. It was at that moment that I was more glad than ever to be a guy and not have to go through that sort of thing (at least directly).
Your patience will be tested like never before, but it is also very rewarding. Just make sure you do the best job that you can because there are already too many shitty parents out there and your kid deserves the best parent possible. It's an investment that will repay you a thousand fold.
Also, it is not too early to think about a shotgun to keep those boys away from your daughter when she starts dating. Ha ha. There is a good place on Kingston Pike in Knoxville that I've been to called Guns N More. They will hook you up with some nice hardware if you so desire.
Take lots of pictures, especially if you have a digital camera. That's one thing you will not regret as they change so fast.

i have a son and babies are all pretty much the same just don't get in the habit of letting your baby sleep in your bed with you a couple times here and there are fine . this one buddy of mine ,god love em but his son is five years old now and has probably only slept in his own bed maybe 20-30 times in 5 years its a bad habit to get into and its not good for the parents or the child . also when your baby is crying don't pick it up immediatley doctors say it is imperative for babies to cry to help develop and increase their lung capacity . i always knew when i was young that i wanted a kid and my son who is now almost 11 ,it is a great feeling to know that someone loves you unconditionally and taking part in everyday activities with them like i coach his little-league football team, and i am also den-leader for his cub-scout troop good times , plus we go fishing and frisbee golfing we go see movies etc. my son changed my life i was on a downward spiral until i found out i was having a kid ,my son is the best thing that happened in my entire life.... GOOD LUCK

Wow, I'm getting a little emotional reading these posts. I have two little girls. One will be 4 in January, she's Daddy's girl. My other girl will be 2 in March, she's Mommy's girl. They are my life. You're child will be your life. My advice...don't sweat the small stuff. Less sleep, nasty (really NASTY...the black tar poop is no myth)diapers, tempers, teething, gas, buying clothes all of the time because they grow like nothing I've ever seen before, and fear of their future. O.K. now I'm starting to freak out.
