Congratulations! Being a dad is one of the coolest things in the world. It is hard to describe it if you haven't been one, so you'll just have to trust me.
Be attentive to your wife, and assume that she will be a bit off-kilter the closer the delivery comes.
After your little lady arrives, let the nurses take her into the nursery! I know it is hard at first, but you and your wife will be better off with the splash of extra sleep you will be able to get. Trust me!
If your wife has to have a last-second C-section, get ready to head into the operating room! Make sure you don't pass out, as that will earn you a trip to the emergency room and then you'll miss everything. That happened to one of my friends and he still gets harassed about it. I personally found it so surreal and cool that I basically told myself "This is too amazing to miss. Don't think about all of the cutting/fluids/goop, and instead focus on your wife and baby." Not exactly rocket science, but it did the trick.
On a side note, don't worry if you don't think you are prepared. People are never prepared to have their first child. Some come close, but it just doesn't happen.
Make sure the nursery is in good order and make sure you know how to run the car-seat. They won't let you take the baby home until she is safely in there.
Okay, I'll stop rambling now. How ironic, my longest post on the Tank has nothing to do with those little plastic guys.
Good luck! I am out here if you need me!

That said, nothing will ever make you happier, or scare you to death more to the point of making you hold your breath than a child. Children area the greatest blessing in the world and a true joy, but trying to keep them safe and protecting them from the world around them will scare you like no other either. I don't mean to make you worry more, but you asked us to be honest, so I am being.
I remember before we knew my wife was having boys, even before we knew there was going to be two of them (twins ), I figured if the baby (again thinking there was only one at the time) was a girl I was going to be like you are asking and scared for her safety for the rest of my life. That's just me and the kind of man, husband, and father I am - sue me. Anywho, once we found out it was a boy (not to mention the fact it was TWO of them and not one), I realized I was now scared no matter what, it didn't matter that they weren't girls I was still scared for their safety and knew I always would be even if they were 40!
Do NOT let that get in you way of enjoying this time though!!!!
Here's the best advice I can give you 3 years in now with two of them -
1. Don't worry about $$, there will never be enough of it so don't wait for it, keep looking for it, or worry about. Trust me SOMEHOW you ALWAYS find a way. That was hard for me to accept but I now know it's true.
2. Again, NOTHING is going to scare you more than worrying about that little girl being safe. It's just a fact of life being a parent, boys or girls, it doesn't matter. Personally I think for guys little girls are just a little more "special" b/c of the whole boy thing when they are older (have I told you to buy a gun yet? What kind? A BIG one! ), but that doesn't mean you won't worry about what dare devil trick you boy will try either (the "ya'll watch this" factor).
3. There is nothing or no one on this earth you will be willing to do more for or sacrifice for. You will find your self doing things you never thought you would do, or would not even be willing to do for yourself sometimes and think nothing of it either.
4. None of this will click until the day they lay that little girl in your arms, it WILL all hit you then and it will also be the coolest thing you have ever seen. Forget everything you may have done before this, nothing will compare. I fore one was lucky enough to get to do it twice in one shot, 3 mins apart. Pretty frickin' awsome if ask me.
So sit back and enjoy what is coming with a good dose of what we have told you too. Most importantly don't let the sound of the wheels of everything else that will be going on distract you, REMEMBER to enjoy this and not forget it. Most of us don't get to do this too many times in our lives and it more than likely be the greatest moment of you life.
Enjoy bro and good luck!

Well, being a new dad myself, all i can say is every day will be an adventure. No 2 days are ever going to be the same. Sometimes my son is happy and smiling and the next he is whining and doesn't want to be held. Then the next he is whining and does want to be held. He makes me laugh every day and i couldn't imagine life without him now. I actually believe that you don't ever really start to live life until you have children. It is one of the most wonderful things in the world and one of the most treasured memories you will ever have. It is also one of the most rewarding, to look in your baby's eyes and see them look back at you. Even though it seems like a long and tedious journey ahead, it is the best thing that will ever happen to you...

My first was a girl, 2nd a boy and Dec. my third will be a girl. If you are having a girl as your first child it will be easier than a boy. Girls are less crazy, more patient, and understand faster until their teens of course. So it won't be as bad and makes parenting allot easier, especially if she is your first. A boy on the other hand needs to be monitored more as they are wilder and can potentially bang their head on every corner….lol Anyways, that is what I think from my experience.
Loyal fan since 1982.

Let me start by saying CONGRATULATIONS!!
I saw a lot of good advice here so, i am going to try to tell you all something funny. Well it was funny to us. I don't have a girl
:`( I have 3 boys. When my 2nd son was well lets say fresh out of me his very first thing he did (besides cry ) was...... Ready? He peed on the Dr. It was like plop you have a boy and then he pees =) We just couldn't believe it. It was too funny for us. He started his lil life peeing on a girl. Wonder what's in store for us when he gets older. LoL.
I LOVED being pregnant especially when they started to move around. I HATED the pain I was in, but it was a price i was willing to pay. They are a joy boy or a girl. I know that you will be just fine. Again Congratulations

Dude, you have no idea what you're getting into!!!
It's the greatest thing ever. I have a little girl. Nothing better you can do in this world than that. It kinda ruined my existence a little (as far as collecting)... I have endless multiples on almost every Star Wars/GI Joe figure made. My thought was to have 2-3 boys who all would want their own collection. WRONG!!! I had 1 girl and she could care less about SW or GI Joe. Now, If I would have collected Littlest Pet Shops... I would be her hero.
But she's great in a lot of ways because we can go toy shopping together. She knows to go to the girls aisle while I scope the boys aisle. She begs for a toy... I say no... I buy 10 toys... haha. But with the bat of an eye she'll get that toy she wants every time.
Enjoy her and congratulations!

Hey 1st congrats....how exciting....I have 3 and only saw my little boy actually be born.....I was there for all 3 of my babies birth, but chose to stay up top and not go down bottom....I regret that every day now...watching the birth of my boy changed my life and the way I look at things....I am blessed to have 3 beautiful children and a wonderful wife...all the emotion that you will go through will be an amazing experience. We can not have any more children, but we wish we could at least have 1 more...Just remember that this is going to be one of the rarest opportunities to do something like this...be supportive and have fun....your life is about to change
