I've got a 9 year old daughter. It can be fun, it can be trying, and it's essentially like having another relationship. Some key ideas to keep in mind:
- Talk to them like they're an adult. Baby talk prohibits proper development of speech, because when a child is still at a very young age, they're trying to mimic you.
- Let them make decisions for themselves. If they succeed, great. If not, then they learn not to do that again.
- Read to them and encourage them to read.
- The television is not a baby sitter.
- When they're in trouble, explain to them why what they did was wrong and why they're being punished. (This is far more torturous to them than being spanked or yelled at.)
- If you have any religious beliefs, DO NOT force them down your child's throat. A little bit of faith is fine for a child, but growing up where you're constantly reminded of hell is a frightening way to grow up. And it ruins self-esteem, and causes adult depression.
- The same goes for political views. Children usually look up to their parents, and you'll find that, without any coercion, they'll probably follow in your footsteps and views.
But for now, yeah - stock up on sleep. And take lots of pictures. They don't stay small for very long at all. 9 years went by like 2 or 3.
(Oh - and when the teething starts, a little bit of Jack Daniels rubbed on the gums does wonders. I had tried everything over the counter and was at my whits ends, and I figured, "What the hell?" It was instant relief for all of us. I think it was my dad's suggestion.)

Congratulations - as the saying goes, it's the toughest job you'll ever love. Dunno if breastfeeding and cloth diapers are something you're looking into, but I'll say that formula and disposable diapers are expensive. Spending habits will definitely change.
I quit my band to spend my free time helping my wife raise my first daughter but I have no regrets.

When I was in trouble....I was told why I was and why I shouldnt do what i just did....then I was spanked..........I see nothing wrong with spanking a child if it is called for....because lord knows I deserved every single spanking I got....(I could go into detail about what i did but you dont have the time)
I was made to go to church every Sunday and Weds night (My dad being a Preacher and all........The fact that I was told there is hell (Which I believe today and believe in God) didnt give me depression or cause any kind of self esteem issues.......I believe the fact that I was brought up that way made me a better person.....Im sorry but I must raise my child in the beliefs that me and the little lady believe in.
I do believe in a heaven and hell.....but have never forced my beliefs down anyones throat...or looked down on anyone who believes otherwise..........
