Have you read Michael A. Stackpoles' fantasy series, The DragonCrown War Cycle. It starts with the prequel "Dark Glory War" then goes, "Fortress Draconis", "When Dragons Rage" and concludes with the "Grand Crusade". Aaron Allston has also done two really good Terminator novels, "Terminator Hunt", and "Terminator Dreams".
Any Harry Dresden fans here? If you like urban fantasy OR detective fiction, or especially both...check out Jim Butcher's series. Excellent stuff. I actually have plans to make a Harry Dresden custom Joe when I have a chance. And for those of you interested in military fantasy (as distinct from military sci-fi, which is replete with its own list of classics) Glen Cook's Black Company is an absolute must read. And again, for any detective novel fans, Cook's Garret, P.I. series is fabulous...if you can take your detective novel being set in a well-realized fantasy world. This, btw, is the kind of stuff I read when I'm not reading for work...where I am an English teacher and a writer. The list of stuff I have to/choose to read for that is pretty extensive.

I am a fifth grade basic skills teacher and the father of a 4 month old bouncing baby boy, so I have recently read everything from Sesame Street Presents Ernie's Touchdown and My First Board Book of Opposites (with my son) to books like Nim's Island and other 5-6th grade level novels, to the Star Wars Pop-up Guide to the Galaxy, War In a Time of Peace, and The Rising Tide by Jeff Sharara for my own pleasure...
These are a few of my favorites: Quiet Strength by Tony Dungy The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Rainbow Six by Tom Clancy American Gods by Neil Gaiman Playing for Pizza & The Bleachers by John Grisham Football Physics by Dr. Tim Gay the five people you meet in heaven by Mitch Albom Namath by Mark Kreigel On Becoming a Leader by Warren Bennis Success is a Choice by Rick Pitino Operation Jedburgh: D-Day and America's First Shadow War by Colin Beaven Parachute Infantry: An American Paratrooper's Memoir of D-Day and the Fall of the Third Reich by David Kenyon Webster Johnathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke |

I'm always working on a book. I had a friend in college who was an English major who was always reading something and every time I mentioned a book he was like, "Oh, I read that." I admired that (I thought I didn't have time) so I tried to emulate it and now I've got into my groove.
I have several books. Most of them, I've noticed, are books that have at one time or another been made into films. Here are some: Lord of the Rings The Hobbit The Silmarillion The Harry Potter series The Wheel of Time series Anne Rice's vampire novels (I'm missing the first five) His Dark Materials (The Golden Compass, Subtle Knife, Amber Spyglass) The Last Unicorn Cabal by Clive Barker (the movie "Nightbreed") The Exorcist The Godfather The Autobiography of Malcolm X Pimp by Iceberg Slim Watership Down 1984 The Mists of Avalon American Gods by Neil Gaiman Dune Dune Messiah (what I'm presently working on) Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Timothy Zahn Star Wars novels (Thrawn Trilogy) Several comic trade paperbacks: GIJOE Marvel 1-5, GIJOE Devil's Due (some of the first ones), Star Wars Shadows of the Empire, Dark Empire I and II, several volumes of Essential Uncanny X-Men Sophie's Choice by William Styron Some others... |

I am currently rereading The Princess Bride, which is one of my favorite books and movies.
Some of my other favorite books I've read are Ghost Hunting by Jay and Grant from Ghost Hunters. Up to Queen of the Damned in the Vampire Chronicles(As far as I got) The handfull of books and stories I've read of the 52 Stephen King books I have. I fear I'll never read them all. I only have a few favorites of the 60 Star Wars Books I have. Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader and the Thrawn Trilogy. I don't like much of what's been going on lately with SW books though. White Jenna Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy(Only have that and Mostly Harmless, which I haven't read yet) If Chins Could Kill: Confessions Of A B Movie Actor and Make Love! The Bruce Campbell Way. The Blackstone Chronicles.

All right, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons! What am I supposed to do with these?! Demand to see life's manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons! I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down! |
