It being the last night that I would be home I didn't know what to feel. I was excited, yet scared. I had so many emotions running around I didn't know what to think. As I got to the peak of Chinook pass, I sat there, staring at Mt. Rainier; my favorite place on earth, wondering when I would be home again. It was so beautiful with the snow falling and the moonlight, I didn't want to leave. Only in the Northwest could you have both at the same time. I sat there, for what seemed like hours, praying to God to protect me and my best friend and keep us from harm and that someday we could be back home with our family‘s. I knew God was always there for us when we needed it. On my way home I got call from David, asking me if I could pick him up from Jennie's place. I got there and they couldn't say good bye. Sometimes I gave him grief for being that way with her, but I knew that if I had someone like he did I would do the same thing. As we left I noticed a ring on her finger. He did it, he asked her for her hand. He was trying to do that for the last 6 months and the day before we left he got the courage to do it. The drive back to the base was silent till David softly said.
"I wanted her to know how much I love her… I didn't know how to say it"
I didn't know what to say to him. Then I did think of something.
"Sometimes the best answer you can give is silence. The expression on your face told her that she is the one that you want to grow old with." I didn't know if that was what he needed to hear. Maybe I should have just sat there and shut up. Then he pips up to say.
"That's what she said. Well, more like 'you don't need to tell me what I already know'…"
He started to break down, but he recovered with the typical David.
"I think I'll get a Toyota in Japan" With a compete BS smile on his face.
"Yeah, I don't doubt it" I said with a bit of a chuckle.
We may have both been laughing about it, but we both hurt.
The next morning, at O' eight hundred, we got all our gear packed into the cargo holds in the F-34's and got ready to head out. We were doing a mid air rendezvous with the other F-34's. This was a new thing for us because the captain wasn't going with us. Well, we knew our planes, but we were responsible for another 34 planes going over the Pacific. Not our idea of fun. We got the Pearl Harbor to refuel eat and you know what else. Next stop was Nagasaki of all places. They just built a bran new air and naval base and we just so happened to be the new occupants. I guess it was ok though, the base was out away from the major population and not widely known yet. We got there in the day light. I was kind of odd. We would have thought that it would be night time but with the time difference and the speed these planes fly at it didn't take us any time at all. As we got the planes parked in the hangers, we were met by our new commanding officer. We were just a little intimidated. He was a Colonel after all.
"At ease" he told us.
"You must be First Lieutenants Inman and Austin. I've been looking forward to having you. I'm Colonel Miller. Your new Commander is on flight, but he will be back shortly. Do you fellas have any questions for me?"
"No sir." I say.
I knew David couldn't resist.
"Sir, you don't know were we could get some chow do you?"
"Sure, I'll show you as soon as you get settled in your quarters."
"Thank you sir"
I looked at David and shook my head.
"Is that all you think about?"
"No, I think about…" he started.
"Don't even say it."
"I was going to say…. My truck… hahaha" he tells me jokingly.
We both stood there chuckling as we emptied the cargo holds on our planes. The others were getting their planes succored. It was a sight to be seen, 3 dozen F-34's on the ground. As I looked around I didn't really see many other planes. There was some older F-18 Super Hornets, three F-35 Lightning’s, four Warthogs, and six F-22's. We gathered that the rest of them were in the air, or shot down. Walking to the chow hall, we noticed "The Wall of Heroes". Others that had been lost to the skies had their names engraved on to a plaque in memory of them. It kinda made us cringe a bit. We knew that we might end up on there too. We got our food then got some sleep, well we tried anyway. It was hard to with what we were still trying to deal with from the last 2 days.
"Morning sunshine." I heard very faintly.
"Uhhhhh… Go away mom…" I said.
"This ant your mom ladies, get your rumps out of bed."
I thought for a second, and then it dawned on me 'oh crap, that's the commander'. We both got out of bed and there he was, So much for a good impression. This guy was all business.
"I need you guys ready for flight in 20 minutes." He commanded.
"Well, so much for getting on his good side." David tells me.
"I don't know, he might be alright, Maybe" I said unsure.
We got out to our planes an there he was standing next to them. We didn't know what to make of the guy yet, but we were just hoping that he was cool.
"Alright guys, you're the leading pilot's from what I hear. I want you to prove it to me. Suit up, we're gonna have a little drill." He said with a sinister voice.
Oh joy, this guy is going to drill us. 'Yippy Skippy' I thought. This was funny because he was flying an old F-18 S/H, I would have thought that he would have had a newer plane then that. Well I guess this would be a little fun getting to do some flying.
"Smoky, clear for take off."
"Bullet, clear for take off."
Well, we were now in the air for the first time fling for training in another country. It was a little odd looking down and not knowing where you were. The place that the Commander was taking us was over in China. You know, I don't know how it worked, but China and the U.S. are friends. For mortal enemy's, to friends in 10 years, some things are amazing.
"Alright guys, this is called deadly training. Go weapons hot."
"Sir?" I asked.
"Are you going to follow orders, or do I need to send you home?" He said.
"No sir" I knew that home meant court marshal, I didn't want that. So we went weapons hot. We where heading over Mongolia and come to think of it, this was really hostel.
"Sir, I don't mean to sound like a pansy, but this is really messed up for a training mission." David says.
"Don't worry, if you guys are as good as I think you are you'll do good. Just don't make me send your family's letters, alright."
"Thanks, I feel all warm and fuzzy inside." I blurt out.
"Now there we go, a smart ass. Just don't become a dumb one, cause that means your dead."
"Don't worry, we plan on following that order" David says as he is laughing.
"Sir, what's your name anyway?" I asked.
"Commander Warn…. Alright four bogies at 4 O'clock."
"Copy that." Responds David.
"Yo, I got five, is that bad?" I asked.
"If you get shot down, yes that's bad." The big guy tells me.
This was a little nerve racking. The only thing we have shot at was dead tanks and RC planes in training.
"What kind of planes are they?" David asked.
"Look's to be SU-87 Kumas. This might be a little more than I thought you guys could handle."
The Kumas were a newer plane that was reversed engineered of a Russian design and made for formidable dog fighters. The F-34 Cougar was based off of the old F-14 Tomcat. It was smaller, much more agile and not to mention, insanely fast. It still retained the sprit of the Tomcat in a more compact and also maneuverable form.
"Oh Shiza, Missile in the air!" David yells.
"Evade and regroup." Warn says with a stern and steady voice, then says.
"Pick one and fire. It's you or them."
Smoky, "Fox 2. Missile away."
Warn, "Fox 2!"
"Sir, I see three of them!" (spoken in Iranian)
"Shoot them down, they will be easy like the last ones."
"Sir what did they say?" I asked.
"That they are going to kill you easy."
"Oh hell no, I don't think so." David says with the sound of spite.
"Well, What are you going to do about it big guy?!" The Commander asks
"I'm gona shoot them down first."
"Now we're talk'n." Warn says with a happy sound.
It was incredible, this was the first time that we have been in combat and I was apperceive, but at the same time I had one of the biggest rushes I have had in a long time. We shot them all down with in 10 minutes of the first missile fired. I guess they didn't know about the F-34's arrival. We headed back to base and the commander says to us.
"You guys are good. Your gona live a long time if you stay on your toes like you just did today."
David and I had mixed feelings. We didn't really realize that we killed people today until we got back to our rooms. We are Christian and told our selves that we would never kill anyone, but we just did. I know David was coping with it better then I was. He's been hunting with his uncle multiple times, but me. The most I have killed is bugs. I just didn't know what to think. I wanted to go for a drive, but I had nothing to drive. I wanted to get out and go away. All I could think of was what Karen would think of me. She was the girl that had my heart. For some odd reason I always was worried about what she would think about anything I did. I know it's a little ridiculous, but I loved her, at least I thought I did. I just didn't have the guts to ever tell her. I lay in my bunk thinking about earlier in the day. All I could think about was that it could have been me getting shot down instead of them.
The next morning, we got up to find that all but six of the F-34's had been reassigned to Sapporo in Northern Japan. This was a bit odd, but we found out later that they had advanced on Russia during the night. Russia lost over 1500 troops, with in four hours. XXXXXXX had launched a chemical battle that the Russians couldn't survive. This was the last straw. They used chemical weapons; this was an outrage to the world. Even XXXXXX's allies were infuriated. We had only been here for 2 days and the war was already getting to us.
At 07:00, the captain came in, I don't really know what he was thinking, but he had this look of sorrow.
"Look, I know this is the first time that ether of you shot at anyone, let alone killed someone, but this is war. I don't mean to sound morbid, but it's your job. I know what you're feeling. I had it once. The pilots we fight are the same as us, doing their jobs. You're here to defend our country and help others in need. You're going to have times when it will be hard to make a decision. I need to know if I can trust you boys to do that for me."
David and I looked at each other. Both knowing that we both wanted to go home, get away from this, live where we didn't need to worry about getting killed and having to kill. Then we looked at each other again.
"Sir, we will do what we are needed to do" David responds.
I waited a couple seconds. I could get out of this, but I knew if I did that, someone else would replace me and that's not right.
"I'm in, I wont let you down" I said.
"Good, I need some good pilots I can count on." Warn tells us as he walks away.
We didn't know what to think. We also had no orders so we decided to explore the base. It was all new so nothing really exciting to see, but something did catch our eye.
"Did you see that?" I said.
"Yeah…. What was that?"
We saw four tiny little specs, moving kind of fast. Before we could figure it out, the air raid siren went off.
"Oh no… Lets book it to the planes" David yelled.
"Right behind ya bro!"
The Commander was already getting in his plane as we got to ours.
"All aircraft in the air. All aircraft in the air. This is not a drill, we are under attack!" We heard over the loud speaker.
As we got in our planes, I noticed some little dark spots getting bigger. It was Su- 185 strike bombers. Warn got it the air faster then I thought was humanly possible. We where still strapping in as he took off. We started off on to the runway and asked permission to take off. What we got was a little startling.
"Are you nuts? Just get'em off the ground you moron's!" The tower tells us.
"Well fine then!" I yelled.
Just as I fired both engines to full power, David also did. The one good thing about the Cougars is the Vector nozzle on the engines. They finally perfected the trust vectoring system to the point of using half the normal size runway. Which was good at this point in time. Just as we both cleared the air field, the 185's hit the hangers and the tower. I had never seen such a ball of fire in my life. They were using Napalm! What was next, nucks!?
"Smoky, Bullet, do you read?"
"Loud and clear.!" We said.
"Head for the east coast. Do not, I repeat, do not engage" The Commander told us.
"What's going on?" David asked.
"I don't know, but all I can say is push and push hard. We need to get out of here and don't look back."
Just as he said that, I did look back. The entire base was gone. We were the only planes that made it. It looked like a ball of fire. We kept flying for what seemed like forever, till we got to the USS Tacoma. It was the newest aircraft carrier in the fleet. As we landed, it felt like we were in a dream. In the last three days we left home, got in a dog fight, and then our air base got destroyed. Mentally, we were both getting messed up. This was too much to take in.
As we got the bridge, Admiral Fisher, was there to tell us of what had just happened.
"Are you boys from Nagasaki Air base?" He asked us
Commander Warn responded with "Yes sir. By the grace of God, yes"
"Ah, so Commander Warn. You must be a man of God? That's good, I hope you other boys are also for what I'm about to tell you." The Admiral says.
"You three are the only ones that are known to make it out alive. All other personal were lost. XXXXXX did a unilateral attack and hit Sapporo, Tokyo, and Nagasaki. There is an estimated 11000 lost in this attack. I regret to say, this includes civilians also. For now, you will be re-assigned here. This is only till you have another air base to deploy from. Sorry gentlemen, this is a sad day."
We could not believe what we just heard. 11000 dead, when would this war end. Why did they target civilians? This is almost like the Nazis all over again. Killing who ever, where ever, it wasn't right. War is just supposed to be the people that fight, not the ones that don't.
