I have to say to put Phelps in the category with Jordan/Woods/Ali/Gretsky is laughable at best. Swimming? please.
No one EVER put Mark Spitz up there with those guys then Phelps gets one more medal then him and all of the sudden he's one of the greatest ever? I call media bullshit for a story and overhype since the olympics didn't have much else going for it. No one cares really anymore about it from what I have seen. When I think of great olympians I think of Ali, Jesse Owens and Carl Lewis. Hell, look how many chances he got to win medals? Some people get one shot at it. I think the guy is good, no arguement there but I wouldn't put him even in my top 100.

All you West Coast Tankers out there... Sorry. Like I had any idea what your programming is in california. Like an 8PM time slot isn't perfect to watch the biggest event of the Summer Olympics? There's like 5 channels playing the olympics in Florida. We have every event on at all times. I think you guys must have missed a programming guide somewhere.

How is he not in the top #100? Mark Spitz made ESPN's list of the top 100 athletes of the twentieth century...not Olympians, just athletes, period...at #33. Just because you don't care about swimming doesn't mean nobody else does. Lauding Phelps takes nothing away from Ali, Owens, or Lewis. Nothing. At all. As for the number of chances to get medals...you're going to penalize the guy for batting 1.000 in his events? For winning every medal it was possible for him to win? Okay, swimming is a medal rich environment unlike boxing, fine. But how do you penalize Phelps for being able to win 8 events? There's zero logic there. Picking "the greatest Olympian" is impossible. There's too many sports for that. But to deny that Phelps is on the short list is reactionary and silly.

Granted it did not transcend a culture like Jesse Owens but it was the best of the best. Michael Jordan played basketball on a team. So did Gretsky. You have to depend on others to be great as well. You leave Michael Phelps and Lance Armstrong out of your mix? I guess you only go for the popular sports. Even though these 2 individuals have gone far above and beyond any feat that Michael Jordan or Wayne Gretzky ever could have accomplished. And they did it all by themselves. That's much harder.

Phelps is a much better athlete than most of them. Have you ever competitively swam? I bet not. It is one of the hardest sports to do. It works every muscle in the body and puts a huge strain on your body. None of the athletes above I would consider a sport where it takes the ability and conditioning that swimming does. They were some of the best at their sport, but that is about it.

At any rate, Michael Phelps is awesome and certainly on the short list of great Olympians and great athletes. But so are Ali, Jordan, and Gretzky.

Ah yes! The age old "my favorite athletes are better than your favorite athletes" argument. Not to be confused with the similar "my daddy can beat up your daddy" argument
