my top beers would be Asahi Super Dry (the best in my opinion. Never had it? check them out: http://www.asahibeer.co.jp/english/p...s/global1.html), Samuel Adams, and Dos Equis Special. Otherwise it's sake or whiskey.

Hey, yeah sake (sah-kay) is made from rice and it is a type of wine. Here in America it's hard to find in most cities so people end up getting really bland, forgettable wines and never try it again. If you go to a Japanese market you should be able to find the good stuff. A proper wine shop should have some too. The kind I recommend both for price and quality that you can find here is called Sho-Chiku-Bai. It usually sells in several size bottles. A normal size wine bottle is about $10 or less. It's very smooth and lots of people that have never had it have liked this one on their first sip. Here's a link:
http://www.takarasake.com/products/sake.htm The real deal is in Japan where you can drink it cold or hot. Hot wine will hit you like a freight train if you're not careful. Over there, your drinking companions are "duty bound", as are you, to refil any half empty glass in sight. The result is you have no sense of how much you've had. You take a sip, look away, and SHAZAM! your glass is full again. This is fine since you do the same to anyone around you. Good fun. .. one sake I had while living there was sold by the glass at a restaurant. It was the best I've ever had. We wanted to buy a bottle. The waitress went and asked the owner and said that to buy a bottle it would cost around $400 US dollars. The bottle itself was about three feet tall and a foot around. For some folks it takes a few times to get to like it, but give it a chance!

root beer. it's good across borders. I've never been disappointed with a .25 cent can out of a walmart vending machine, and the only thing disappointing about a bottle of "the good stuff" is the price.

Sake is a bit of acqiured taste for an american palate, but it is worth checking out. I've got a pair of Morita bottles (black and white) that were both alright.
If you want to give it a whirl, I suggest asking your liquor salesperson for a gift set of a median priced import that way your not stuck with a half bottle of something you hated. |

Back when I would consider myself a bar fly (the entire 90's) I would drink just about anything. I'm ashamed to admit I had a bit of a drinking problem. Day after day I would waste my life (and liver) away just sitting at the bar pouring it down my throat watching my wallet shrink and my belly expand.
Years later I met a wonderful girl who I wanted to spend more time with then hanging out with my drunk friends in some smokey bar.....(I don't know how she was ever attracted to me...I was a mess back then) I halted the drinking, settled down got married and had two beautiful little kids. Circa 2008 I stick strictly to a nice refreshing ice cold Coor Light every now and then. I enjoy throwing a few back while cooking on the grill or hanging out with the fellas. Now, anything stronger then a beer will knock me on my ass, give me a massive headache and just make me a unhappy grumpy person to be around. Believe it or not, my main drink is Pepsi (or yo joe cola to us old heads).......the beer I can have when the situation calls for it, soda I need everyday. |

For sake, I prefer it hot but I also enjoy cold unfiltered sake. It's a little sweeter but it's pretty smooth.
