Hello all,
I’m new to the board & have some questions. Well 1st, a short bio… I’m 34 years old, married with a 3-1/2 year old boy. I collected GI Joe when I was a kid and kept all my toys for the son I hoped to have one day. Well I took my Joe’s out of the attic about 2 months ago to find out that one whole box of stuff was mistakenly thrown out. Missing some great original Joes like 1st addition snake eyes, storm shadow, Fire Fly, etc… and also some parts to vehicles I have and Joe figures I have. I was going to look into buying the missing stuff and start collecting all the GI Joe figures and vehicles I never had. That’s when I found out about the 25th anniversary releases. What a break! And they are awesome! I have already gotten a lot including the Target exclusive vehicles and what I could find so far of the new vehicles for July. I have really gotten back into toys since having my son. Now I have an excuse to play with them . Before he was born I was collecting just Gatchaman (aka G-force aka Battle of the Planets) stuff. But after he was born I started collecting all “The Batmen” toys and then Batman the animated series and Justice league toys. My question is…. What’s the deal with customs? There were always kids when I was little switching body parts with other Joes but I considered it blasphemy to take apart a Joe. Now I see that all you Joe collectors seem to do it all the time. So I guess it isn’t frowned upon. Do you make Joe’s to look like pacific guys that there are no toys of? Or do you make up your own guys as well. Do you keep them separated from your real Joe collection or do you put them in with your original Joe’s? What about vehicles? Is it the same with vehicles? What about non-Joe vehicles? Thanks for you help. I have been going through the forums for a while now and you all seem like a bunch of nice guys/girls. Thanks in advance, Gatchaman |

Welcome to the Tank! Good question. I started cutomizing figures last November, when the 25th hit and after seeing all the great customs out there. I too thought it was taboo to disect/cannibalize your toys. Then I saw what people were doing and the customizing bug bit me.
The main reasons I customize a figure is to either create something that hasn't been produced or improve upon an already released character. I also have made up some characters too, which happens when you have a lot of extra parts lying around. I keep my customs I make for myself with all my other figures, no segregation here. I haven't tackled any vehicles yet. |

Customs can be different for any given person. A lot of 25th style customs are made of characters that haven't recieved the 25th style update yet. (In my case, I've made Dial-Tone, Breaker, Cutter, Wild Boar, Tunnel Rat, etc...) Breaker was made before we found out he was going to be released, Right now my Breaker is with all my "Store Bought" Joes because I like my custom better than the official one, But I do have some customs that don't go with the other displays like my "Mutated Cobra Commander". Many people also will make customs of figures that were never made. I have a whole squad of Cobra Mechanics for instance. There are also those customs that are done to improve an exsisting figure, like when I changed the torso on my Major Bludd figure or when I removed the hat on Lady Jaye.
All the same can be said for vehicles too Basically customs are done for the fun of making it (At least in my case) I enjoy being able to switch a few parts and have a figure that Hasbro probably won't ever make |

Thanks for the quick response. And very nice Customs Shogi! So what kind of paints do people use? Is there any adding of plastic? If so is there a special plastic putty or something people use? I tried a search but didn’t find anything on paints and/or putty.
Thanks again, Gatchaman |

Many different brands of paint are used, just make sure it's Acrylic paint and not Enamel. Enamel paint will never dry on soft plastic (Like what most of the 25th figures are made out of)
Some of the popular brands are: Testors Model Masters Tamiya Games Workshop Warhammer Paints Apple Barrel I have used all of these, and the first two are the best in my opinion. As for epoxy putty, the best I've used is called "Green Stuff" or "Kneadite". It comes in a roll and has a yellow side and a blue side. After you mix it together, it turns green and then will air dry very hard after a few hours. I used some cheap stuff called "Quicksteel" I got from wal-mart and I wasn't happy with it at all. I didn't have time to sculpt it either because it would cure in 5 minutes! Super Sculpty can also be used. I used to use it a long time ago. The problem with it is that you have to either stick it in the oven and cook it, or boil it. Here's an example of Green Stuff being used on Golobulus Everything on the head and the ridges on the wrist and shoulder are Green Stuff as is the part of the tail that directly conects to the torso (When the detail gets more intricate, that's where the Green Stuff ends and the Mcfarlane dragons tail starts ) |
