Will retailers ever start really cracking down on the people who do this?
People who consistently keep returning swapped toys and such? I mean considering how much money it costs the store, and since it's illegal, why don't they start tracking down these lying SOBs and pressing charges? I'm getting really tired of seeing obviously swapped-out comic packs and even single-carded figures on the pegs.

They do. I used to work for one of these Big retailers and I learned they follow rules by the book but they know who's who when returning items to the store. the main thing is that there is a UPC or barcode to make the return. so these guys slip thru the cracks everytime. trust me the eye in the sky is watching!

the retailers just send them back to the manufacturers as defective, and the manufacturers eats the cost because they don't want to piss off their customers -- the retailers -- and see reduced orders. Target doesn't care, they don't lose anything.

it really doesn't cost the store anything. I was a manager at walmart for a while. Items that are returned open or damaged, or found in the isle stolen or broke, are returned to the manufacturer and they credit the store. Insurance from the company covers damages like that. Plus these items are purchased in such large quantity's that loosing say 100 gi joes out of the 10,000 purchased isnt going to matter.

Target does care. I worked Loss Prevention for Target and we would bust those trying to swap and return stuff. Depending on the situation, sometimes we would see the same people returning stuff and would let them do it a few times, to build a stronger case for when it was time to prosecute. We had some good people who worked Customer Service and if it was a item they weren't sure was the right item or was some way tampered with, they'd radio the Security people and we'd look up the item. Stuff like that does cost the store because it increases the insurance rates.

Wow, Target actually tries to find the person to prosecute them?
Or do they just have to wait for them to make one too many "returns" and then catch them in the act? And I wish all stores took this that seriously.

It would depend. We would keep in touch with all of Target's Regional Security people and there are people who will hit every Target in a state doing crap like that and after awhile, we could pick up the pattern and notify the other stores about who/what to be on the look out for. So, then we'd let the employees know as well what to be on the look out for and then when someone fitting that profile came in, we'd be on them. We also would regularly meet with the Security from other retailers, and exchange info about situations like this. A few times, we made busts with other retailers on scams and stuff like this.

Eventually we won't be able to return anything to a store. All sales will be final. In cases where merchandise is defective, consumers will have to deal with the actual company that produced the item, not the retailer from whom they bought it.
So...Hasbro won't be taking back Copperhead/Shipwreck comic sets with Shipwreck and...Purple Boots Destro!? Hasbro will be like, there is no way Shipwreck was packaged by us with Purple Boots Destro so you will not get your money back. Try to sell it on ebay as a rare variation or something and maybe one of those troglodytic collector-types will take it off your hands. Or so I predict. |
