Maybe i'm exaggerating, but I must have more toys than any kids within a 10 blocks radius. So my question for everyone here is: What do non-collectors or the average person (anybody) thinks about your collections or obsession with toys of any kind (no, not you sexual toys)? What are their comments or concerns about your toys as a grown man? And do you feel ashame or embarrassed that you still collect and play with toys? Do you put them up on display at work?
As for me, thank God my closest friends share the same interest as I do so I kind of keep my stuff on the down-low. Everyone from my family are kool with it except for my Mother. She would say something like why are you so into those things? I try to explain the reason why I love my toys/collections, but she doesn't seem to comprehend. Oh well, guess she'll have to accept me for me. |

most people are cool with my collections. but if i never tell them before they come to my house and they see my office/"geek room", they just say "wow, you have a lot of... toys?"
they say it as a question because along with figures, i also have airsoft guns, RC cars, etc. so they arent really sure if everything is a "toy", persay. as for work, i dont really have my own desk. i share with 4 other people who i rotate shifts with. if i brought one or two to display while i am on watch for 12 hours, my supervisor would probably give me some really strange looks, maybe even ask what the heck i am doing with toys on the watch station? but there are some civilians i work with in the same building, and one of them has anniversary prime, and masterpiece megatron posed on his desk. when he isnt here i am so tempted to transform his megs into gun mode and put it in his drawer just to freak him out hahaha (he doesnt know i am also a collector/nerd) sometimes i have trouble with my wife. she gets upset because i dump all of my spare cash into toys. (we have "allowance" every paycheck i get $100) she is also concerned about space. we live in a small 2 bedroom apartment tower on base. i have a few shelves, but things get cramped quick, especially with bigger figures (sigmas and masterpiece TF's). once we move back to the US and we move into a house with 3 bedrooms and a garage, its GAME ON! i have even put my star wars collecting on hold because of the space issue. 90% of my collection is boxed up in storage right now. sucks, but them's the breaks. overall, my wife supports me in whatever i do, she is just a very financially intelligent person. before we married, i was living paycheck to paycheck, blowing it on car parts and figures. i have changed a LOT since we married, and she knows this. so every once i a while, she lets me go nuts. one day she even surprised me and brought home leader class movie prime for me! she is awesome and i love her to death. i just need to take it easy sometimes so she doesnt kill me.

For the most part nobody seems to mind. Most people that come to my house love to look at them and sometimes tinker with them.Everyone has hobbys,if you don't have a hobby i find that very strange.
But,at the end of the day.I'm a single dad that takes care of my kids,i'm not off doing drugs or getting drunk or looking for that next one night stand. So,if someone wants to judge me on my toy collection, they have issues that go beyond me and my toys. |

everyones super positive and makes the same remark "it looks like a museum" Its cool cause a lot will start talking about their favorite Joe, Star Wars, or Transformers moment. The weirdest time was an electrician came to my folks house (where most of my Star Wars collection is on display), said I had a great collection then went into his Star Trek love and collection. I was just there thinking, this is random.

feh! trekkies...
to quote wuher: "we dont serve thier kind here!" but yeah i had a similar experience. i had some japanese contractors come in to change my AC filters. one of them saw my masterpiece convoy and pointed "eh?! SUGOI!" i immediately got excited and recipricated in my very crude japanese "hai hai hai! CONVOY wa untoni sugoi, ne?" (yes yes yes! optimus prime is very cool, right?) we both laughed and he finished up, while looking around at the rest of my stuff. he left giving me a thumbs up and said "otaku?" i smiled and said "mmmm... scoshi." "haha... mata!" "hai, ja ne! arrigato gozaimas!" (i probably murdered some of the spelling there... i only know how to say stuff, not spell it)

Wow! Seems every collector has a story. I am a graphic designer by trade so that pretty much makes me a geek/art/pop culture fanatic. So everyone pretty much knows how I do. My fiance (we are getting married in 2 weeks) is totally cool with my addiction, she collects beatles memorabilia so it works out great. I am a huge TF and SW fan and just got back into GIJOE with the 25th. My friends joke about my collection but are just as excited to see new stuff as I am. I have a really modern minimalist apartment (im a designer...its important) until you go into the office where its a toy explosion. Just the way I like it.

I've been collecting SW's figures since '99 and stopped shortly after Attack of the clones, it started getting expensive along with my Upper Deck Golf card collecting. I didn't get into the TF and Joes until this year with the Masterpiece collection of TF (Picked up Skywarp this saturday and he's friggin awesome) and once i saw the throwback that hasbro was doing with the 25th Joes, i was sold.
I'm going to just stick with the 25th anniversary and Masterpiece collection of things and eventually get a display case to place them in. Anyone know of any good ones? I saw this 4 piece tempered glass case for $275 which stands about 6ft high, so it should do but not sure if want to throw down that much cash. I can use it for more figures ;) |

Well...I just re-wrote my whole post, lol.
Realized I was rambling on and not getting to the point (like I'm doing now), so let's try this again: People think I'm a dork. I know it, they know it...they're just too PC to say it. They kinda look at me crooked because I'm from the Bronx (that's in NY). Apparently, to Mid-Western people (where I live now), people from the Bronx will rob you in a heartbeat, then suck the lifeforce out of you like a Chupacabra-dyson vaccuum hybrid. So, that being said, when they realize that I'm an absolute toy nut and have a store on ebay (SELF RIGHTEOUS PROMOTION!), they kinda look at me funny. Eh, who cares what they think though....I'm happy |

My friends collect and play Magic cards, so they really can't make much fun of me. Although Magic might be a little more cerebral. Still geeky. My wife poses my small collection of Joes her own way after I set them up to do battle. Usually they end up in compromising positions after she's done. I did have one lady come over and ask "are they models?" but haven't had much other response. |

Way I figure it everyones a geek in their own way. People I'm around are cool but then again I try not to surround myself with assholes. My particular favorites are the sports geeks who talk shit. My Joe figures are "gay" yet a thousand pictures of Dale Earnhart is completely fine!
