What I don't get, is the "they aren't made for us, they are made for kids!1!" argument.
I LOVE the JL(U) series, I LOVE the Batman:TAS, I liked X-men Evolution, hell, I even dug the style and narrative of the TMNT series (before they like went into the future). Those are shows I could watch with my nephews and get into them as well. So obviously some creative teams know how to appeal to both, but most of these series that are done now, and I havent ran across anything I can stomach long enough to watch with my nephews again. So again, why is it so hard to try to make stuff that adults would get into as well? Geared towards us, or not, it can still appeal to us if we don't feel like utter morons while watching it. Right?

not all anime-inspired cartoons are a huge success.... even when the toyline comes along.
ie. Stormhawks. this serious is ok. but when you look at the toy line? no one's buying it. i guess you can only appreciate the series when you're old enough to understand it. like story-wise, and it has to be deep. but as a kid, you could care less, as long as you enjoy it.

I'm absolutely stunned this thread has gone on this long and nobody has brought up Avatar the Last Airbender... it's new, aimed at kids, very anime inspired, and IMHO very well written and drawn. Good characters, good plots, good action... To me it really stands out from the pack of crap of kids cartoons. It's way, WAY better than it should be... Any other fans out there?
That show is awesome, did you know M. Night Shyamalan is making a live action movie? that show is really great, on Fridays I watch BSG, Stargate Atlantis, and Avatar!!! |

That's true. Infact one of the major reasons I stopped going to the TF boards was their willingness to accept anything that was handed to us. It's as if they think criticism of any kind will lead to Hasbro taking their ball and going home. Why are fans so afraid to ask for a G1 or RAH style show to go with the more retro style toys that are actually moving off the shelves?

i have also seen the new spider man toys.... and can't really say i am feeling those to much other than venom...
my questions are 1. what the hell is it with this weirdo style now? are these people on LSD? 2. who decided everything should be re-hashed and done this way? 3. why is everything being "dumbed-down" for pre-schoolers? 4. who the hell is buying this crap when it comes out? 5. if g.i. joe is done in the to me what seems "corny" oddball look will you watch it? or buy the toys? 6. what else can they re-hash and make all weirdo looking? so far they got joe, transformers, and now batman, spiderman I may be getting old.... but I LONG for some quality cartoOns with a story and some decent dialogue and good writing my favorite "cartoons/series" would have to be... bill bixby- incredible hulk (not a cartoon) but since the movie is out and i haven't seen it i thought i would throw it in.. also i like the fact they are tying stuff in across the bOard. batman the animated series (the original) (loved it!) justice league/JLU- love it to.. masters of the universe (200x) loved it!! thundercats (liked alot of them some were campy) silverhawks (same as above) transformers (most werE awesome) g i joe ( same as above) (fox) spiderman (great stuff till about the last year or so) lol fox (x-men) good episodes.. to bad no dvds :( i guess all the good ideas and the time of quality has since passed... maybe in 10 years somewhere someone will look and see that this is how thingS should be done.. but for the next 10... it looks like were in for a different experience |

1. Kids were a hell of a lot smarter then than they are now. For example shooting a gun in Joe was a cartoon only thing. Kids were not known to do that once the show was over. I know when I saw that on tv, I'd steal one or two of my mother's spoons (stainless steel, of course...I'd be beheaded if I did it with the silver) and do a gijoe battle. The ones who were "dead" would be (and probably still are) buried in her garden. That was the end of it. NOW the kids are going out and killing others with guns when they see it done on tv...can you say GULLIBLE??? 2. Parents now are so careful of what their kids watch on tv and in movies and have a rating for everything...because as we all know big brother is watching every move that is made, oh no they see me typing this...AAAHHHHHH! |

Nope, G.I. Joe in the 80's was aimed at 5 y/o's, but in the 80's it was one of two things:
And saying kids are going out and killing others with guns? What are you even talking about??? Maybe it has happened occassionally (I really don't know, and somehow I doubt you can provide examples) but people been saying this sort of thing is some kind of problem since at least the '50s (Seduction of the Innocent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

So you've never heard of Maxwell Atoms? Carl Greenblatt? Creators of Billy and Mandy and Chowder respectively.
the problem lies in the fact that you're watching Cartoons based on existing properties (toys or comics). GI JOE, MOTU and TF in the 80's were plagued with just as much bad animation and flawed writing as the modern toy cartoons. Watch some animation based on an original idea, you might be suprised. TFA has that "teen titans style" because Derrick Wyatt did in fact do the designs for Teen Titans AND Transformers Animated. I don't wanna hear another word about the new Spectacular Spider Man show..my man Cheeks did the designs on that and i'd hate to get nerdrage and start e-yelling at you all. *fist shaking*
