i wonder how far they are form making a real working model of a light saber?

OK, I'm going to go all 'Star Wars Geek' for a second....don't get nervous....:p
The principle of a 'lightsaber' is almost completely attainable right now. All it takes is the refraction of light, much like a laser. And all we need to do is lock down the principle of harnessing the beam and locking it to a controlled length.........most likely using a tri-hardened gem triangulation....

i wonder if they could use diamond for the handle. its the hardest substance out there.
