Pictured above is the unproduced Sea Wolf that would have been released in 1995 as part of the Battle Rangers. It was a recolored version of the 1984 G.I.Joe Killer Whale Hovercraft and would have come with at least one action figure - possible Duke.
Interestingly enough, 1995 would have seen the return of other classic vehicles recolored. The Tactical Battle Platform (1985) was to be recolored and released with two figures - Iceberg and Snow-Viper, while the Mobile Command Center (1987) was to be recolored in more military colors and released. :.(

Joe back to it's roots: A Special Forces/Commando Unit based in reality. Can you imagine: a WHALE? The Battle Platform? I think we would all be thrilled to have updated/retooled versions of those now! "Battle Rangers" - again, just my opinion - seemed like the culmination of what all the Sub-Teams were supposed to be. Perhaps Night Force came the closest to actually being a tactical, Special Ops Team, but they were a TRU exclusive. "Battle Rangers" would have been a more serious attempt to reclaim the image of an elite Spec Ops Unit.

Yup! Here's one from that magazine! Clearly, Yo Joe has the goods. I knew someone would know. Did this ever come to be in any other form? Cool vehicle. Also, I agree with the others - This line might've revitalized Joe at the time, brought it back to earth (literally). While I like the Star Brigade stuff as toys, and cherish my Lunartix figs, this just seems totally rocking. Good call on making a convention exclusive in the future! |

95 seems like it would have been a great year.

I'll admit it sounds like 95 would have had some great stuff, but I can't think it would have saved the line.
Toy tastes had changed remember this is the time Turtles ruled the toy aisle...and to be honest I personally found the 90's to be a fairly sad state for a lot of things. But I'd like to see som pics of that Snow-Viper. |

There's pictures of the unproduced Battle Platform's box in another thread, it wasn't going to include Snow viper and Iceberg, but Snow Serpent V2 and Big Ben recolors.
I wish the stuff had been made, but 1995 wouldn't have saved anything, just postponed the end another year. Anyway, it's documented that the company politics of Hasbro's take over of Kenner axed GI JOE as we knew it (and Kenner's take on the property, Extreme, flopped big time). |

No, I don't think Battle Rangers would have saved the line. By the mid 90's toy buying tastes had shifted to Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, and X-Men figures. That's not to say it wouldn't have been successful, because by a lot of reports, Joe was still selling pretty "OK" even in the mid-90's and it was more the internal politics mentioned above that killed the line than poor sales. I just doubt it would have returned Joe to the "golden age."
I doubt Battle Rangers would even have brought back many of us "hardcore" fans who lapsed in the early-mid 90's while teenagerdom overtook us. It's easy to look back through nostalgia colored glasses and say, "Oh yeah, it totally would have been huge!" but I bet if a lot of us looked back objectively we might realize that we were probably occupied with other things at the time. I may never have fully ceased my toy buying habits, but they definitely waned during those years (limited mostly to aforementioned X-Men figures), and didn't really start to pick up again until the late 90's with the resurgent Star Wars line (and for Joe, the TRU exclusives). Many of the folks here lapsed all the way from the early-mid 90's til' the 25th Anniversary, from the way it sounds. I doubt Battle Rangers would have changed that. |

I would have loved to have that grey WHALE... oh well!
It'd be great to see the Club tackle this one day, I agree!
