Hello,
I was fortunate enough to acquire a Defiant AND USS Flagg all for $25.00. Of course as you may expect, both are missing a ton of parts. So, I decided to focus on restoring the Defiant first. The Defiant is in surprisingly decent shape with very little tabs broken, the only big problem is one of the lift arms snapped. The gears and springs all work well, though. So, my question is, do I have to replace the whole gear set or just that lift arm. I'm new to this restoration thingie and am unsure if I have to buy the whole set of lifting parts or if I can just buy one lift arm? Thanks for the help. |

Hmmm...
Just checked mine. The arms appear independent. I am betting you could just replace the cracked arm. Good luck, restoring a Defiant is a real challenge. Do you have pictures?

First, you don't need the springs to play with the toy...you will have to hold it and give it support until it either reaches the top or bottom positions, the springs are meant to aid the gears. With a snapped arm, you may want to find some way to glue and support it. Obviously the part is fragile. If you provide a pic of the damaged part there are many that can offer you help in suggesting a fix. However you may be able to find a replacement for that part on ebay or through the tank. It's a commonly broken part and mechanism so it will be slim pickings. |

I snagged a Defiant, FLAGG, Terrordrome, Sears Missile Command Center, Mobile Command Center, Night Boomer (all complete), MISB Skystriker, AFA graded C10 Commando Snake Eyes and the original Shipwreck 2-up. I traded the guy a bottle of gypsy tears to protect him from the plague of aids.

So far I've paid £600 for a crappy defiant that's gonna cost another £600 to make right and a flagg for £900 (Both include shipping to the UK). I have NO money left! I love GI Joe, Just been offered a Terror Drome for loads.... Maybe I hold the record for spending..no... giving the most for a toy??
Back on topic, All the components of the Lift mech are seperate however 2 things you need to know if your restoring to it's original condition. 1:The lift was rubbish, even if it were working 100% right it still makes the nastiest sounds and giving that the toy is pretty much 24ish years old it's REALLY brittle. 2: make sure that the crawler and the arms both have the fixing points. These are the pieces the springs attach too! Even if they do, disconnect the springs and if you want to lift it up, personally i'd remove the whole crank assembly and lift it by hand, every part strains to lift the huge weight of the toy. It was me that asked about sort of the same thing a week ago, I have a really yellowed crawler that has the tabs and is completely unscratched and the other is grey as the day it was made but the tabs are both snapped. I've done a nice mod that puts 2 metal pins instead of the plastic fixings and it works although the sounds that it makes are horrible! |
