Looking all the great pictures on this thread really makes me miss my Rolling Thunder. I had one when I was a kid, however I didn't get it until sometime in 1990. Hill's had it in the clearance section between the toys and the house wares or hardware I forget what they called it. It was the area where they would set up Christmas trees in the fall. I don't remember what it cost, but it was discounted enough that I got it and it wasn't even my birthday.
One of these days I'll get a replacement for the one I had back then, but it'll have to wait until I get a bigger place. Thats the one thing that has been holding me back on getting more vehicles, is space. Keep posting pictures, I love seeing these old Rolling Thunders! |

I remember getting both the RT and Phantom for my 8th birthday. Unfortunately my dog at the time like to eat plastic, and she got a hold of the missile carousel, and completely chewed it up. I played with my RT until the wheels literally came off. Since getting back into GI Joe in 2000 I've managed to fully restore my original, plus 4 more 100% complete RT's, for a grand total of 5. I sold one to a buddy of mine for $80 a couple of years ago, and just recently scored a shell with all 8 axles intact, and have managed to almost completely restore it with parts on hand. I am waiting for the 6 carousel missiles to come in from eBay, and am looking for 2 of the big red missiles and 3 of the big yellow missiles. I am a fan of multiples apparently.

I just finished fully restoring mine although one axle was missing a piece of the two compression halves, so I Macgyvered the shit out of it and it works great. What an awesome vehicle.

I've had a boxed RT for a couple of years now that I opened over the weekend now that I have the space to display. It was an awesome joy to open an almost 30 year old toy and put it together. My wife was cracking up how excited I was about it, and how careful I was putting the pieces together.
I was really worried it would not be in good shape because I had bought a Bridgelayer in the same lot and the black plastic tank treads broke the minute I opened it. Also, it wasn't even complete, even though the box looked like it was factory sealed. It's in really good shape. I had to replace to O-Ring on Armadillo, and a couple pieces were warped - probably from being stored in an attic, but everything was there and the stickers were still good. This thing is a well designed toy - really like how the sliding mechanism works at the main cannon and the missile tower unfolds. |

I recently acquired a Rolling Thunder, in a trade that, aside from the RT, was not in my favor. THAT SAID - It was entirely my choice, and that's not the point.
The point is, I have a complete, clean RT, and I love it. I need to take some proper pics, but taking this behemoth out into the world for a good setup will prove to be...cumbersome, to say the least. :-) |

Looks great GI Jim! I'm Jealous, as mine is a refurbished put-together one. It really is a great toy. I noticed it's sitting next to the Mobile Command Center, another favorite of mine.
