My wife got me the Ultimate GI Joe guide for my birthday, and I've been having a blast going through it again and again.
One thing struck me as odd, though. Under the description for Starduster, it says it is the most sought after figure. I am just curious why? About 10 years ago, a friend of mine gave me a box of about, I don't know, 100 figures when he cleaned out the attic at his parents house. I was heavily re-collecting Joes from my youth at this time, so this was beyond awesome. There was only one figure in the lot that I had absolutely no clue about, and it turned out to be Starduster (after ID'ing him on yojoe.com). I had never seen or heard of him and had no memory of him. The figure didn't seem to spectacularly cool or anything, so I threw him the pile that I was going to sell to my local comic shop (which included mostly 91-94 figures from my friend's box). I haven't thought about the figure since then, until reading that blurb in the book. Now, I don't care that I sold, nor do I have any desire to try and acquire one now. I am just curious why people want it. I checked ebay, and am watching an auction for one now, with only his helmet, nothing else--and it is currently at $53. Seems wild to me. |

The problem is that many people did not know about him back then....and didn;t get him....so there are few that exist compared to mass retail sales (he was a mail away).
So now completists want him....but he is very hard to find...and even harder to find complete. All this = secondary market monetary value

^^^ This.
Not to mention there is also a few different variations of him. So some true completionists want to have all of them. It's a difficult figure to track down, let alone find a complete one of a certain version you need.

And some of us who had him didn't know he was rare and sold him for $1.00 at a garage sale.
And don't get me started on Red hiss tanks.

Sigh makes me wish I took better care of mine. As a kid, the jetpack and helmet made him awesome!

Starduster is rare, so he's worth more. I remember getting him as a mail-in figure through GI Joe cereal originally. Most kids didn't even know he was available at the time. They may have re-released him later as a mail-in with flag points, but originally you had to buy the cereal to get him.
