I don't think there was an adult collecting fan base back then. Not of (then) modern toys anyway.

Oddly enough, Hardball was the toughest for me to find. None of the department stores had him, but one day I randomly came across one at a Safeway.

For my 10th birthday, April 1985, I wanted a Storm Shadow badly, my mom had to search everywhere to find one, god bless her
Other than that, I never had a hard time finding a figure, but things were different back then, I would go nuts over a particular character and bug my mom until she took me to the store, and there it was. Turns out, all of my favorite characters from he man, transformers and G.I. Joe, are now the hardest to find and most sought after, so I had great taste and didn't know it. |

CG82 you aint kidding about the prices. Everything was a decent price except the almighty Flagg. I had to come up with half for that one and my parents helped out with the rest. As for figures, Snake Eyes '85 was the one for me and the Mauler MBT was another. My dad was visiting family in Puerto Rico and got me one there. I didn't get Snake Eyes until recently off an eBay auction.
You got family here or just your dad? |

Back then for me it was Snake Eyes, Duke and Cobra Commander. You could absolutely not find them here. K-Mart, Hills, Harts, TRU, Children's Palace not a one had them. Although to be fair, TRU and Children's Palace I only got to go there maybe twice a year if that around my birthday.
My first Duke was the Tiger Force Duke and my first Snake Eyes was the 88 version and I never had a Cobra Commander til 91. I remember getting that Cobra Commander they only had two on the pegs at Hills. I grabbed that CC and didn't look at anything else I headed for the registers and paid for it. I was paranoid or something that someone would take it before I got to the car with it lol. Before that I had never seen a CC in the wild, hell I didn't know anyone school mates or family that had any version Cobra Commander. I had thought about getting the second CC for my best friend. I left it there incase someone else like me came along...the next day at school my friend opens his book bag and says hey look what I found at Hills...and sure enough there was the other Commander! Anyways that is why I try not to complain too much about the overflow of Snake Eyes, CC, Duke and Storm Shadow now days...I just think back to when I was a kid and never had them til almost at the end my childhood or having to wait 20 years in the case of Cobra Commander (v.1) to finally get one. |

Wow....I didnt know everyone had such problems finding joes back then. in 85, every saturday morning my friends and I would make a 2 mile trek to the big stores (tru, service merchandise, sears, etc) and we would make it to the stores at opening. toys were always in abundance. heck, i even remember going to tru at 7pm at night and seeing loads of snake eyes and stormies hanging there.

Service Merchandise was the greatest! They had a whole aisle devoted exclusively to Joes. There was also a place in Charlotte called Lionel Toy Warehouse. That place rocked, too. K-Mart in Gastonia, NC always had the He-Man hookup, while K-Mart in Shelby, NC had the Star Wars stuff. Most of the Transformers were a Roses or Matthews Belk thing. Service Merchandise was where the Joes were. If you couldn't find them thare, for a few bucks more you could hit the two toy stores in Eastridge mall (Leisure Time Toys and K&K Toys). TG&Y and Macks in Kings Mountain (my hometown) did pretty good, too.
