My brother and I got Joes for our birthdays (his in Nov, mine in Dec) in '82, and seriously started "collecting" in 83 and 84, and I can't honestly say we had a hard time finding anything. We just went to Wal Mart and bought whatever was there and whatever our mom and dad would let us get. We had quite a bit of the smaller stuff -- figs, vehicles, but never the bigger stuff although it was available. We had most of the "sought-after" figures -- Firefly (my fav!), 85 Snake Eyes, Tomax/Xamot, etc. I remember, faintly, seeing an 82 Snake Eyes at a Fred's store, and I probably even asked my mom for it, but I'm sure she said no since I never got it, but that didn't bother me much. Anyway, as far as collecting goes, it didn't matter to us since we played with the toys anyway.

Funny, I went to Children's Palace looking for Sega Master System games and saw a bunch of those Strom Shadows and remember thinking---"why did they give him a red backpack?"
I was too old for Joes at that point-until a few years later when I said "I collect comics--why not toys too?"
Glad I kept most of my original Joe figures......

In the 80's when I was playing with Joes instead of collecting them that I appreciated them enough to think about who I had trouble finding. All I know was that any new Joe added to the pile constituted a "good day".
I remember being traumatized when I "lost" my Wild Bill. Years later I found out that I left him on the living room floor and my dad stepped on it for the upteenth time and Bill's hat cut his foot so he tossed it.
I do remember lusting after the Terrordrome though - because I already had the Joe HQ.

I was always able to find everything I wanted. Everything was in walking distance of each other (at least 300 feet). on one side of the road, we had a toys r us, sears and a service merchandise, all in the same parking lot. I would spend hours stea.....I mean buying gi joes. then across the street, we had the mall, which had playworld and jc penney. never a problem finding figures.
the only things that eluded me for the dreadnok sears vehicles.

I remember having trouble finding specific figures from other lines, but for some reason I was always able to find the GI Joe I was looking for. Whether in the store or by trade with a friend. The thing that pissed me off the most was all the time I spent searching for the Blank figure from the Dick Tracy line. It was advertised in the US but only sold in Canada, but no one bothered to mention that part.

I remember Storm Shadow V1 was the first time my friend and I went looking for a figure and just couldn't find it. We had worked all day with his father cutting tree limbs and then helping haul them off to the dump. In payment we were both going to get an action figure and we both wanted Storm Shadow. We searched all over Bock's toy store but he wasn't there. In the end we went home with a couple of Firefly figures. With his mask he sorta looked like a ninja, and he had a cool opening back pack and walkie talkie. (we were easily impressed in those days).
Forget it Jake, it's Hisstank.

I remember it took me awhile to track down SE back in 82. I always liked The Cobra Trooper, and Rock n' Roll out of that first wave were my first figures, and my favorites. Rock n' Roll is still my favorite Joe.
Money was tight back then, and I bought them with saved allowance. I saw SE a few weeks later in a store, but couldn't get him. He was cool, preninja, and it seemed like forever til I tracked him down. Ended up getting him with money for my birthday from my aunt. My mom couldn't find him either.
