Okay so, we all know StarDuster is one bad ass JOE. The thing is on ebay I have seen him as high as 300 $. Do you think it's downright crazy that people bid that high or that he has a high price tag?
Curious what everyone thinks. |

The price reflects what a person will pay not how much actual value he holds. The reality for most is, what is he worth to you? To me I never owned one and thus, do not care about him so I wouldn't pay that much for him.

I didnt have him as a kid and i recently sold one i had picked up at a good price. I loved the figure and would pay decently for another nice one if i could. Again, something is only worth as much as someones willing to pay.

You can argue about the greater historical significance/cultural impact these particular works had, sure, but when you get right down to it, it's all about collecting. The more popular something is, the more people collect it, driving up prices of the scarcer items. And of course you can say "it's only worth what you or someone else is willing to pay for it", but that's the easy answer. Auctions reaching $250-300 for a minty/complete (or sometimes incomplete) Starduster aren't the exception anymore - it's a fairly regular occurrence. So yeah, with a little bit of research (i.e. completed listings, keeping things on your watch list, etc), you can make a pretty accurate judgement of what a Starduster figure is "worth", and I'm not talking about "worth to you, blah blah blah" but the so-called "market value". Now, as far as my opinion on Starduster? I could go and say that he's not worth that much because I paid less 1-2 years ago for mine, but that would be ignoring the fact that the market is constantly in flux. In my opinion, demand has been going up steadily for this figure, and prices seem to have been steadily rising as well. I remember discussing this at length at this year's con with other members here - and by the way, there wasn't a Starduster in sight being sold either time I went (07 and 09) - if there was one, it was snatched up really early, probably when only other dealers were alllowed to buy stuff from other dealers, or else very early afterward. Personally, while I'd always like to buy things for less money, I'm kind of excited that prices are going up because it means that more people are getting into the hobby. However, it has caused me to become a bit more frantic in quickly filling those holes in my collection, before prices get too high!

Well, if anyone has something good in trade, I've got an extra minty NEAR-complete Starduster. Only thing it's missing is the visor, but I was planning on giving him an extra one from the Armored Panther figure (if it fits). Got the original gun, helmet and backpack.
I was thinking of either putting it up on Ebay or waiting until next year's convention to trade/sell it, but if the right trade pops up here I might be interested. It'd have to be something good though... I'm talking minty Action Force (or other international) figures or an equivalent hard-to-get vintage one, like Gold-head STEEL Brigade or possibly silver Grand Slam...

One of my favorite vintage figures and I'm glad I have both versions of him - Recondo torso and Duke torso. I've had them for years, and kept them both mint complete and I know I never paid anything close to that. I think I paid $30 for one and got the other in a collection. But I'm not at all surprised that he's fetching so much. He's been steadily rising for some time and finding one complete is getting harder.
So yeah, vintage Joes are getting up there in price, which makes me getting that elusive Gold Head Steel Brigade an ever more difficult task. |
