I just bought one from Ebay (at the reasonable price of $20.50 plus shipping (I bought other vehicles too)) recently but some of the parts are missing and the canopy is broken at the hinge.
Anyways, 1) Is there someone who makes repro weapons/parts for G.I. Joes like Transrepo used to do for Transformers? 2) What's a good substitute for the springs in the rear wheel covers? 3) Is it true that there's no difference between the left and right rear fins except for the small numbers 1 and 2? 4) I'm thinking of buying repro stickers from JRuben (too bad Cobra Stickers sold out of them). What's the best way to apply them without screwing up? Can you use soapy water, apply/slide into place and let it dry? Thanks in advance! Last edited by Darkseid; 10-18-2009 at 10:22 AM.. I used the springs from pens that have the click ends that allow you to retract and extend the wirting edge of the pen. I do not know its technical name but you play with them every day to some extents to make a pen work LOL. They work very well if attahced securly.

Thanks for the pen spring idea! While it's not perfect (kind of weird looking), it does it's job in holding the doors while the wheels go in.
I could take a few photos of the Skystriker (no decals yet) after I cleaned the crud off of it (why do many "vintage" toys seem to have that?) with rubbing alcohol. I'll do that later. |

I'd love to hear other ideas on Skystriker fixes. I have 1 complete one, one with hardly anything, and one with the fins and canopy. I'll of course find some parts on eBay, but sellers have kinda gotten ridiculous on prices for individual parts. Thanks in advance to any responders.

Goo Gone works well as does soaking the plastic pieces in a warm bath of dish detergent (something mild). I scrubbed all the pieces with a toothbrush, as well. Don't forget to take everything apart to get all the nooks and crannies of the insides of the fuselage for a truly clean jet.

goo gone is a great tool to use to get the old decal glue off, i usually buy one of those cheap throw away baking pans put all the parts in there and give it a good soaking. use the goo gone gel in the spray bottle. its orange in color. after that wash it really good with dish soap cause the goo gone will leave a film on the plastic.
as far as parts go, good luck bidding against the rest of us on ebay or try yard sales or flea markets or even toy shows. when you put on decals just trim them out with a new razor blade and use the razor blade to peel the decal from the backing. dont touch the decal with your finger it will leave fingerprints in the glue. position the decal and then press it on from the middle out. if you mess up most will come back up if you pull it right off. i have restored 2 to full status and working on 2 more. good luck with your project and if you need any other help just ask. |

With all my Skystrikers I peeled off all the old decals, Goo Gone with papertowels to take off the glue residue and scuff marks. Bought decals off of J.Ruben and cut them out with an exacto knife and also peeled them by using the exacto knife to carefully lift the sticker off the backing. I also used the old decals as a reference for cutting out the new decals so i got the exact size and shape right.
Here's the closest pic if took of my skystrikers with J.Ruben decals on them |

Thanks for the cleaning/decals tips, ppl!
Anyways, here's the pics I promised of the Skystriker (cleaned of the old decals and crud)- Here's the Skystriker next to a 25th Rattler ...and here's the landing gear. The regular spring (that came with the toy is on the left while the pen spring (to replace the missing spring) is on the right. Next, I'll order JRuben's stickers (to be continued). I'm getting some assorted missiles but since I don't know anyone who makes repro Joe parts, I may just make molds and cast resin copies of the missiles (since I might be getting one of each different missile when I need 2 of each). If there's a demand for Skystriker parts, maybe I might sell resin copies (at cost plus shipping unless either people are against it...or Hasbro sends me a "Cease and desist") but that'll be sometime in the future. |
