I liked them...but the biggest issue was pure and simply badly thought out gimmick.
Joe has always been a bit off putting to the masses when it strays 'too sci-fi'. 1st BF2K skirts that line pretty hard. 2nd 87 was kinda the turning point year. So much stuff came out that was crossing that line. I mean Chuckles, Croc Master, Raptor, Cobra-La, The Fridge...the Movie. If 86 was the Golden Age...87 saw the beginnings of the well of ideas to start going dry. Not saying it was a bad year...but I am saying I think interest started to slip from a lot of fans. Next lets talk about the vehicles themselves. They were hit or miss at best. The Dominator was a tank...with a tank shell of armor that had skis??? OK. The Eliminator was a Jeep / Tank? that had a laser platform that I'm assuming took no less than 4 men to remove? (sounds real time consuming in battle) to reveal a missile platform. The Marauder...the worlds longest front motorcycle (thats actually a tricycle) and harder stear than an Ox...attached to a treaded laser cannon? The Sky Sweeper...an odd looking tank to be sure, that has a phone booth that takes again I assume no less than 4 men to remove and needs to have two large laser cannons and an antenna that need to be reattached and realigned in new positions. The Vector jet...probably the best of the vehicles. And yet it seems odd that this big bulky pod is attached to the back. The Vindicator...a hovercraft that poops out a smaller even less armed and armored hovercraft. And finally the Pulverizer...not an awful looking tank but it looks serious awkward with cannon extended. And not exactly designed to combine into the Fortress. Although it can be added. I'm not even gonna discuss the Club vehicles. Last...lets talk about the Future Fortress. It looked less like a fortress and more like a shanty town. And what exactly was its purpose? I mean if its meant as a quick temporary fortress to support ground troops...it seems pretty time consuming to assemble, and not very protective. Hell just spreading the second armor from the Dominator seems like a better faster cover. Or is it a fortress for when the BF2K craps out their own (prototype experimental IE: EXPENSIVE AS HELL) vehicles to assemble for the main team to save their bacon? (that more of a humorous observation that a real one). Overall the idea was to give you a sub team that was so cool it felt like the future of warfare. In the end they just felt like gimmick that either needed a way better design to their vehicles so their Future Fortress didn't look like a community build out of fridge boxes and shopping carts...or just drop the Fortress gimmick all together. |

I liked the figures but the vehicles were clearly lower budget items than earlier Joe vehicle sets. The plain white plastic was harder to love even at that age.

I am likely in the minority, but I liked BF2000 as a concept. I thought the vehicles were pretty neat and the figs are cool.
What damaged their rep in my eyes is seeing that each vehicle had a dedicated driver yet they were sold separately. I think the biggest fail was apparent to a lot of kids when my brother and I dutifully collected all the vehicles so we could build the fortress together. We were beyond irked when we realized that building the thing meant putting the stuff next to each other. |

What went wrong? For starters, I’d say manuvering your vehicles through an oil storage facility within range of enemy artillery, if I recall correctly....

BF2000 will forever be a shanty town to me.... I loved the commercial as a kid. BATTLE FORCE 2000! SECRET FORCE FOR G.I. JOE!!! BATTLE FORCE 2000! It did want me to get-them-all but that "combined" mode was pretty terrible. |
