How deep does the repaint and body part swap rabbit hole go? When did Hasbro start this practice?
Well if we look back to the beginning of the GI Joe ARAH in 1982 we can see just how many repaints and retools have been made. The entire line was riddled with repaints. Yet even now when I look back I can see the pattern that so many collectors today hate, forming. There is a history of Hasbro making figures by repainting and body part swapping. Almost every figure in the original 13 where a repaint and swap of another figure. There are six acceptions being Scarlet who is a completely original figure, Stalkers head, Snake Eyes head, Clutches Torso, Steelers torso, and Rock N' Roll's torso. The rest of the original 13 are a who's, who of parts swaps. Why did they do this and why are they still doing it today? The answer, profit. Why make completely new molds for every figure when you can save time and money by just repainting and body part swapping. We all need to remember that Hasbro is a toy company and as such the more toys they sell the higher their profit rises. The more money they make the better it is for us because the line will be around longer. So to wrap this up, bellow are a few pictures I have taken of my original 13 GI Joes. Take a look and I hope you enjoy. Oh, I forgot to mention they are all strait armed figures accept for Steeler. Samantha

Pretty cool, but Steeler seems to have caught a case of swivel armed battle grip. That'll teach him to use public restrooms.

I dont mind Hasbro releasing repaints most of the time i buy them, those repainted Neo Vipers and Viper Commandos i like crimson, Nano, etc. I like the Joe desert 5 pack, I like green camo Sgt Stone with red beret, Bench Press is basically a repaint, that new green camo pants Hawk that comes with the new L.A.W. playset, i like him. Repaints come in handy sometimes.

Great collection of straight-arms! Also, I think Rock N' Roll has a unique torso in that bunch.
I don't mind the body parts swapping, I think it can create results that are sometimes downright amazing. Look at all the cool customs people have done by using pre-existing parts. Even repaints can look grand! For example, off the top of my head, I love the new RoC Grand Slam and RoC Para-Viper. There are certainly misfires (Air-Viper Commando I'm looking at you!), but I enjoy comparing repaints with each other. I used to despise repaints since it meant shelling out money for what is essentially the same figure (this was during the VvV/Spy Troops days). But I've grown to admire them.

You are correct, I edited the original post to reflect that. Thanks for the good eye.
