My brother was talking to some industrial engineers who he is friends with. These engineers make things in China with an outfit out there. "Designed in the USA, made in China." Just like everything else anymore! They were in St Louis at some store and the engineer pointed down at some plastic toy.
He said to make that mold it would cost the company somewhere around 10 thousand whopping dollars! No joke!!!! So I can understand why they swap body parts. It is annoying for us action figure aficionados but the toy company bean counters got it worked down to a science. I guess plastic molding is very complicated. They was reading in Star Wars magazine about how hasbro actually sculpts their figures to scale in wax. Then they proceed to make molds. These molds are very heavy duty. They have to churn out thousands of these things. Being so small I can figure it has been frustrating to may maintenance mechanics at those plants. I used to work in a plant, I know. Seeing as it costs so much, I can understand why Hasbro recycles parts. To me it isn't so bad as long as the figure pretty much looks different. Samantha, you mention the "Original 13." Seeing those it brings me back! I have to say, I think it is Grunt and Zap. They have the same head. It looks like a premature balding/deformed version of Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith from the Matrix). I never got over how ugly that head mold is and they continued to reuse it. Even in the coveted TRU Stars and Stripes set! Anyway, hope this info is helpful.

I'm not a repaint hater, especially when it gets us new versions of former repaints. But when it's a bad repaint (Gung-Ho's head on cutter, Doc's head on Short-Fuse, Outback's head on Monkey-Wrench), that's irritating. I've heard a Hasbro rep say heads are the cheapest thing to make, so why do they get cheap there?

Samantha is correct.
And not only is it profit, but by today's standards toys are more costly than ever for Hasbro to produce to keep competitive, the only way they make a good profit on any mold is by continuous reuse. Hasbro has to reuse a mold at least once from the original for it to be considered profitable, BUT for those that they don't (say a part is just to unique to that figure for reuse) then they get that profit back by reusing a part from another figure several, several times to compensate. Believe me, Hasbro has said on MANY occasions that they don't expect anyone to buy every repaint, & it is more of a way to keep key items & molds in use & on the shelf for others that may have missed them the 1st time. |

Isn't that a riot compared to how some people complain about repaints. I had this conversation with a friend a while ago and ended up going through the years to see that not one year has solely new parts. Everyone had rereleased molds! :?

The only time repaints got really nuts was the GI Joe vs Cobra line repaints. It got to where I didn't know what color characters were supposed to be anymore. The thing is, they could give us more "Frankenjoes" and we could get all of our original characters. I'm all for that. We've got enough parts for Thraser, Airtight, Lowlight, Lifeline, and a bunch more. Let's do it, already!

How deep does the repaint and body part swap rabbit hole go? When did Hasbro start this practice?
Well if we look back to the beginning of the GI Joe ARAH in 1982 we can see just how many repaints and retools have been made. The entire line was riddled with repaints. Yet even now when I look back I can see the pattern that so many collectors today hate, forming. There is a history of Hasbro making figures by repainting and body part swapping. Almost every figure in the original 13 where a repaint and swap of another figure. There are six acceptions being Scarlet who is a completely original figure, Stalkers head, Snake Eyes head, Clutches Torso, Steelers torso, and Rock N' Roll's torso. The rest of the original 13 are a who's, who of parts swaps. Why did they do this and why are they still doing it today? The answer, profit. Why make completely new molds for every figure when you can save time and money by just repainting and body part swapping. We all need to remember that Hasbro is a toy company and as such the more toys they sell the higher their profit rises. The more money they make the better it is for us because the line will be around longer. So to wrap this up, bellow are a few pictures I have taken of my original 13 GI Joes. Take a look and I hope you enjoy. Oh, I forgot to mention they are all strait armed figures accept for Steeler. Samantha

great pics, as a kid i never even noticed that they were repainted and reissued body parts. I do remember getting my first figure duke, yes i know not snake eyes, he was really difficult to find. Anywyas I don't mind if the work is done well, however I bought the greatest battle dvd pack, the one that snake eyes has a hole in the side of his head for some sort of splinter cell binoculars or night vision. And of course no night vision for this snake and why you ask, I asked the same thing and someone told me it bc it is a repaint - that is not good, the figures in that set are not the greatest and are a poor reflection of the quality I am used to seeing. I hope hasbro has some vision and realizes its not all about profit, like most thngs in life a delicate balance is needed, and [I] say delicate bc there are many collectors already that despise the roc and that direction, I think that once they include some modern era figs in roc packing they will start to colect again, imo. I know from exirience that when hasbro makes bad desicion it can be costly. Im going to post up the beast that killed my intrest, when I saw this I stopped collecting.

You may be right on Rock N Roll but I am having a hard time telling if his head is unique. I guess I will leave that one up to you all to decide.
