Hey guys, I think I bought a figure on ebay that was touched up with paint, but I can't tell for sure. Is there a way to test for this? And, if it is paint, is it ok to ask for a refund? I thought sellers had to reveal when figures are touched up with paint? Thanks for your help, still learning the ropes.

Can you post some pics of the suspected painted areas?

Sellers are required to be accurate but could be either specific or generic and still be accurate. If they were aware paint had been touched up, yes - they should have disclosed that. Bear in mind that they may have acquired the figure from someone else and not been made aware, or it could have been a toy from their childhood and they may have entirely forgotten that it was touched up. If the item was listed as "new" and was touched up, clearly that is inaccurate and you should be able to file a claim on that. If the item was listed as "100% original vintage" but was repainted, then you could also file a claim with eBay. If it was just listed as "used GI Joes from my childhood", probably not. As far as testing for touchup paint, maybe try a blacklight? Some paints react differently under a blacklght than others even if they are the same color (different formulas). Finally, keep in mind that sometimes factory paint apps just suck and it may indeed be original. I've opened brand new figures before that had a damn fingerprint in the paint from the factory. Cryo, Great points I didn't consider. Yeah, the listing didn't specify that it was new, or even 100% original vintage. I will just be more vigilant when looking over these listings. Makes total sense. I really don't mind that much TBH, the figure is still cool and having fun messing around with it. Thanks guys.

Sata, thanks. Yeah, I guess even some of the ones my kid doesnt want and we sell might even have paint from decades ago, so I'll just have to let this go. I think I get it now. The figure in question is a separate figure I bought for myself, has a really small part I think might have been painted. But I'm over it now that I get the exchanging hands issue. The history of these things are unknown so I'll just have to enjoy it for what it is. Thanks guys.
