I only went to a Ben Franklin once when I was younger and got a lego cost guard set. It was a neat store with tons of little do-dads

I got so much at Ben Frankie. Joe Headquarters, the Mobat, Slugger....all well after they were gone from other stores. Service Merchandise always had Joes so did True Value. Glory days indeed. Grocery stores even had Joe Comics.

True Value/Kleins hardware, back then it was known as Coast to Coast. it was pretty much a hardware store for household fixer upper stuff but for toys they were stocked full of Masters of the Universe, LJN WWF rubber figures, and G.I. Joe. Prices were a little higher i think back then I think.
If I had a time travel device id go back in time to at least 1984 where all the good stuff were in aisles |

On the east coast, we had Woolworth's, Caldor, Service Merchandise, TSS Seedman's, plus Toys R Us, Child World, KB Toys and Play World for Joes. It was a golden age. We didn't get K-Mart, Target, or Wal-Marts here until MUCH later.

I'd say those were the best days of affordable toys and large toylines, but I'd say for quality of toys nowadays can't be beat. The quality of Black Series and Legends for the price is fantastic. If they were from a foreign company instead of from Hasbro, people would be willing to pay $60 for them and say it's a good deal.
I'll also add that we had it better in another important area: playsets and large vehicles. We will most likely never see another Terror Drome or Castle Greyskull on store shelves again.

Man, I think about that almost daily. We had a local variety store/ pharmacy that was absolutely loaded with Joes. One of my fondest memories is of a hot June day, walking the two blocks with my little bro, and getting push ups and a Joe each. I got Big Ben, and he grabbed a Saw Viper. We really did have it pretty good in our day, didn't we?
Got my first Joe, Breaker at a little card and candy shop on the Main Street in the hood. Got my Gung Ho in this pool and patio supply spot that made an aisle for the lucrative toy craze of the 80s. And only ever found a Storm Shadow thanks to a really cool guy who ran an appliance shop a couple neighborhoods away. He kept cases behind the counter and saw my little brother an I rifling through the pegs, when he called us over. With a wink he pulled two out, case fresh. As much as I loved TRU I had some really great finds in small local shops.
