Ok so we are moving halfway across the US. The movers come soon and my husband has a defiant that I need to box up. Any tips to help me out? My life is on the line with this thing. My husband was even contemplating flying back just to box the thing up. I have no clue (and I mean NO clue) about any of the names of the pieces when I read the previous threads about taking this Snazamajig off and that Snazamajig off...so maybe laymen’s terms would be appreciated. I bought bubble wrap. Lots of it. And packing peanuts. I can’t find a dang box anywhere. I was thinking of trying to find a piece of storage furniture to put it in (so hey if I’m spending money to box the darn thing up...I might as well get something for myself out of it afterwards) but even that is proving difficult as every cute piece of furniture isn’t wide enough. But maybe if I take a certain Snazamajig off then I can condense the monstrosity. Any tips? I know my husband would appreciate your kind help as he treats this thing like it’s a baby. I should probably pack a bottle with it. Maybe even make a bubble wrap diaper for it. Just kidding but this post is serious. I need some help.
PS I did read the blue doors (even I can understand that term) can shatter. So how do you take them off? PSS Just trying to answer those questions to make a profile to post proved very difficult....My husband should be proud. |

In all seriousness, I don't own a Flagg so I can't give the specific help you need. There are a number of members here who do own a Flagg and will, I'm sure, be along shortly to help you out. In the meantime, the only advice I can give is that the original product box for the Flagg was huge anyway. So even if you dismantle the beast you should be prepared to use a pretty large box or two for packing. The main deck comes in several sections which can be taken apart though, so that will help. You can take a look at all of the pieces involved here also, if that helps. If nothing else, that should help put names to "faces," as it were.

There is a special tool you can use to get it all broken down into manageable pieces:

Ha! Wow. Well that's embarrassing. I actually totally read the title as Flagg for some reason and the blue door question didn't even tip me off...though in hindsight it should have. I was being sincere with that second paragraph! Nuts! It's after midnight here, so I'm blaming it on that.

I don't have a Defiant, so I can't comment on how to safely dismantle one, but when a friend shipped a Terrordrome to me and wanted to minimize the risk of breakage by dismantling much of it, he used wooden 2x2 to make a square frame and used large sections of cardboard to build the box over that. Not sure you want to have to get carpentry involved to box it up though. I hope someone on here can give you some more tips on how to better dismantle and pack it.

Buckle up, this will be a long one!
I have one I got used and had to dismantle it to clean it and have a few pointers. Some of these really only apply in the case of a complete Defiant, so they may or may not apply. The blue doors have a really long metal pin that holds them on and forms the hinge. You can pull it out, but be very careful. One end has a rough texture, push it from the other end so the rough bit comes out first. I used a small screwdriver and very lightly tapped it with a hammer (and I mean REALLY lightly) until it started to come out. It should slide right out once it is started. You want to be careful and support the door through this whole process so it doesn’t drop. I would use pretty much an entire roll of bubble wrap to go inside the angle of the door before wrapping and I would use a lot around each and give each their own box.( I don’t know if this is feasible, but it’s my suggestion.) There are a number of red guns all around the base of the crawler (the tank/platform that the blue doors attach to) that can come off, but have some really fragile tabs. The ones that hang upside down have tabs and slots that you can see easily from the top. The problem is that they are really snug and the red plastic can become extremely brittle if you push too hard. I have replaced several over time and have learned that if the red plastic has really faded in color, it is more likely to break. Once the doors are off and you have the shuttle and booster off you can very carefully flip it over. There will still be the raising platform attached, so be very careful about holding it all together. There are a series of wheels along the bottom that can be pulled out, but it is extremely dicey. The problem here is that if any of the posts that plug them in are weakened, they will likely snap off the rest of the way. The biggest problem is that the weight of this thing almost always breaks or weakens them. So, the best advice I will give I to flip it over an use styrofoam to build out a support structure so you do not have to remove the wheels, but you are not letting the wheels support any weight. There is a grid framework all along the bottom that can be where the weight sits. The booster (the big middle part that the smaller shuttle hooks onto the top of) will have two little gun bits that come off the front sides. Be really careful with those. Do not try pulling them out, avoid moving them at all, really. Cutting styrofoam to protect them, but not touching them, will be the best. The shuttle section has a few bits to watch for, mostly at the back. The obvious ones are the three fins. They are extremely difficult to remove without breakage. Cutting foam into shape around them would be the best, or rolling bubble wrap to fit between them. At the back, there are the two levers that drop down the landing gears that should get some extra padding to keep them from snapping. Hopefully that gives you some of the main things to watch out for. Overall, be extra careful. I have pretty much stopped touching mine since something stresses or breaks every time I go near it.
