Hello. I'm working on restoring a childhood Defiant that has been in storage since the mid 1990s. While cleaning up the booster section, I found that both pegs on the revolving door had broken. Luckily I managed to find both broken pegs. Here are a couple of pictures:
https://i.imgur.com/XzmAyTi.png https://i.imgur.com/ncpLbKB.png I was reading that the revolving door is one of the most fragile components on the Defiant and acquiring an unbroken one is an expensive proposition. What is the best way to repair thin pegs like this? I've seen recommendations ranging from using plastic cement to trying to insert a thin metal rod. I saw one video where an owner created a new peg from a Fang skid and epoxied it into place: https://youtu.be/Mm71aeSbWKI?t=1835 I'd just like some advice on how to best approach this. The Airlock (the large white piece) for my Defiant doesn't peg into place very well. Just testing out the non-repaired door in the booster, it looks like it will be tricky to install the combination of the door/airlock. I'm afraid that even I manage to repair the pegs, they will break again when trying to reinstall the revolving door. I was even wondering whether it would just be better not to try reinstalling the revolving door. Any help or advice would be helpful. Thank you! |

Welcome to the forum! I don't own a Defiant and have never laid hands on one, so I can't be of much use in recommending repairs.
However, I design 3d-printed replacement parts for Joe vehicles and have them up for sale (on-demand printing) at Shapeways. If you aren't shy about using a reproduction for this we could talk about arrangements for loaning the part and having it modeled for 3d printing. I've done this with a number of rare/hard-to-find parts for Joe stuff already (Mauler, Skystriker, Flagg, STUN, etc.). You can see the basic idea of what can be done with these replacement parts here. If you are at all interested in the possibility of pursuing this and would like more info, just let me know. In the meantime, you might try cross-posting this question in the main "Defiant Owners" thread.

I also remember seeing it being referenced for USS Flagg fan tails. I'll send you a Private Message in a little bit. I've been carefully studying the main USS Defiant thread over the last few days for restoration tips and identifying problematic parts. When I was doing forum searches, it seemed like it was better to create unique threads for asking about restoration questions. |

I would probably go with plastic cement. The thought of inserting a metal rod doesn't sound like fun to me. I had to wait about 6 months before I found an unbroken door and yeah, it cost a lot, less than two new unbroken blue doors though lol. I haven't put it in yet, too nervous to try it.

In the end, I decided to manually repair the door. I drilled out the centers of the pegs/door, ran an appropriate metal support, and glued it together. One side went together really well. The other side is a rougher fit.
I'm not going to dare try to reinstall this piece in the Defiant booster section. It is just too fragile. I hope Zap is doing ok. I haven't heard from him for a couple of months. |
