My Joes went missing a long time ago, and I only recently started building a new collection. I don't buy packaged figures/vehicles - just loose stuff that I can enjoy completing, fixing, or messing around with.

But today I received a figure that I bought on ebay, and this one happened to come with its original card (file card and flag point still attached). Opened it up to check the condition of the figure and found myself sat for 10 mins, holding the card.

Damn time machine - really took me back. It was like I was back picking the cards off the shelves on shops, looking at the artwork and really loving the little pics of all the other figures on the back.

That was some good packaging right there.

Anyway, just wanted to say this to someone.

I had myself a very similar moment back in 2000, with the release of the RAHC, which was the sole catalyst for my figure mania.

The card art was very minimal, mind you, but seeing all of those familiar faces peeking out at me from behind the bubbles, and on a store rack no less.... man, that was the single purest moment of nostalgia of my adult life. I literally stopped mid stride, stared for an eternity, and then peeled myself away to get the necessaries that I'd come for... then found myself returning to the toy aisle again and again for just one more look, and finally hastily grabbing 8 2-packs and barreling towards checkout before I could come to my senses. My live-in GF at the time was NOT impressed. What a can of worms THAT day opened! The irony is that I was in the toy aisle by sheer chance- I used it as a detour to get to electronics!

I agree 100% on those cardbacks, though. To this day I can still get lost for ages just looking through vintage card art, game manuals, and my personal favorite, the mail away inserts. I don't know if those were the same in the UK as here in the US, but "Terror on the Tundra" is my favorite, and at least partially responsible for my dio-building.

I also had a similar moment. I had a lot of figures when I was a kid and then once 1990 came around I sold them all. Fast forward to 2005 I started getting back into collecting Joes again. I was getting vintage figures and vehicles off Ebay. I remember getting the HAVOC with Cross Country and when I opened the shipping box both the 1985 and 1986 catalogs fell out. I didn't know the seller was including those. It immediately took me back being in my room and just staring at those little catalogs for hours. Great times!

I never stopped buying Joes, and I did not grow up in the 80s or 90s, but I had a similar moment when I found a MoC Bushido when I was around 12 or so. It really gave me a feel of what it was like to get Joes back in the day. I also have a lot of those little catalogs which are a lot of fun.

I don’t really remember feeling this way about any other line. Which isn’t to say that Action Force/GI Joe was my favourite, because it certainly wasn’t. But then I also can’t think of any other toy line that had the depth of character variety to make packaging, adverts and cross-sells so attention-grabbing.

Got home last night, threw the figure in a stand and with the others... and then put the card on my mantle piece. Really have to avoid the temptation of buying these cards though... so expensive. And, like Satan, the g/f would not be impressed. She’s pretty tolerant of the figures though - as long as I get a cabinet or something when they run out of the space they’re in.

Now I'm curious, which cardback was it?

Same here. I didn't have many Joe's as a kid; maybe 6 total. One of my parents passed away from cancer in June of 84 and just being a kid wasn't something that I got to do much of. Over the last couple of years I've slowly been re-finding my old toys and restoring them. I get a kick from the comics, all those file cards, and a chuckle at how the humor was sort of like what I experienced in the military.

Good stuff.

Just a Rock Viper. Nothing special. As it happens, I think this was the last GI figure I bought as a kid, but it's the first card I've gotten as an adult. I guess there's some weird poetry in that.

The first figure I bought to restart my collection was also one I had back in the day - a Buzzer. There's still quite a few I need to reacquire, but I haven't been rushing. Been picking up lots of others.

That sucks, mate. Something like that changes everything.

But I'm glad you're reclaiming some of that time. One of the best parts about being an adult is having the money to buy this stuff yourself, and not having to listen to anyone who suggests that it's not a wise purchase.
