I started recollecting vintage Joes 2 years ago and have collected most of the 1980s figures. Now that I am moving into the 90s figures, it seems to me that the resculpts of 80s figures are not improvements and often inferior to the original figures. Take a look at Battle Corps Lifeline and Outback for example. Can anyone think of 90s resculpts that are actually superior to the originals?

All the 90s figures are way superior to the 80s version of a character.
They were bulkier, more detailed, more weapons. Gave a true meaning to mobile task force. Fight anything, go anywhere. Best example for me was the Alley Viper. Battle Corps black and yellow was bad ass in comparison to the first one. That missile launcher and face shield were epic.

I have to disagree. The 1992 Hawk in his flying glider suit looked goofy compared to the 1986 bomberjacket Hawk. I also didn't like some if the gimmicky oversized launchers that came with the figures. I did recently buy the yellow and black alley viper and I am ok with that sculpt.

it's all a matter of taste, for sure, but being born in '81, I definitely straddled both decades, and have equal nostalgia for them, and for me the nail in the coffin wasn't so much the sculpts as it was the technicolor invasion and the reliance on gimmicks. I'd say there are examples of both.
Had the colors been more realistic, and the gimmicks tossed out,I would have to say that duke, ace,(definitely ace) stalker, cobra commander (IF the back hadn't have been flat), dusty, sci fi, low light, mercer, detsro and cutter are a few examples of great sculpting. AV would've been there as well, but I actually like the 89 sculpt better- if it would've had the 92 colors it would have been almost perfect. and then there's bazooka... what, did we interrupt your fishing trip, bro? and grunt... take some milk of magnesia, dammit!

Beachhead, Ace, Roadblock, Shipwreck, EW Deep-Six, and Cutter look better with the 90's sculpts. Some figures like Lifeline and Wet-Suit aren't necessarily better, but look more appropriate to the job. Some sculpts do look a bit goofy like BC Stalker and Dial-tone. And some are ruined by color choice like giraffe pants Leatherneck.

I'd have to add gung ho as well, in fact with the 2000 (1?) paint apps, that's a damned solid figure.

The day glo colors, gimmicky accessories, and weapon trees in yellow and orange definitely did not help the 90s figures. I do have to admit that Deep Six, Duke, and Ace did have better 90s figures. But don't get me started on Armored Tech Star Brigade Rock n Roll, Duke, Hawk and the like.

Battle Corps Lifeline, 91 Snake Eyes, 91 Dusty, Snow Serpent v2, SF Psyche Out, 92 Duke, Battle Corps Duke, DEF Cutter, DEF Mutt, Backblast, IceBerg, Shipwreck v2, Ace and Flint were all close to their original figs if not a slight improvement. The original sculpts are much more iconic and in many cases more realistic but I feel those I listed above were pretty solid in living up to the original sculpts (my only qualm is with the desert colors for both Dukes and Flint). Hasbro did put out alot of misses though like Dr. Minbender, 91 General Hawk, 91 Cobra Commander, Eels v2, Firefly v2, Bazooka and Leatherneck (both are figures I love but can see all of the negative attention they get lol) are all inferior compared to their originals. |

I am right there with you - born in 82 I have a great appreciation for both (I am admittedly partial to the 90-94 figures just because I can recall those better from my childhood collecting days).

It's kinda funny, because truth be told, I'm really not into the 82-84 as much, because they're so rudimentary looking. with some exceptions, of course. I'm really into the whole series from 85-91.

'93 Ace from the Ghost Striker X16 is a perfect fighter pilot figure.
