The 1992 Shockwave was a great figure, even though the lack of camouflage made him look slightly more generic. I liked how he had a removable helmet.

I'll agree with you on that for sure, and I'll even go one further: while I like the overall aesthetic of the V1 better, the sculpt on the V2 is definitely an improvement. the proportions are far more realistic (as much as any toy from that era can be, anyway)

Mercer was a great update and even incorporated a knod to the viper uniform.

I am not a fan of the weapons tree at all. For me the accessories that a figure came with were almost part of the identity of that figure. The weapons tree just genericized everything and used mostly lame guns to boot. On the plus side, when collecting figures of that era I don't care at all about the weapons being complete, which makes it easier and cheaper.

That's exactly how I always was, pretty well happy as long as the two "best" accessories were there, missile launchers straight in the junk drawer (aside from barricade's- his made a tiny bit of sense.)

I think it depends, some I think were better, others worst. Usually, in theory they had more detail, but not always. See Stalker v5 or Lifeline, they are even simpler, and nearly looking like knockoffs.
I hate quite a bit that they started using the same names, when they even changed their colour of hair! I mean, what's the point of calling LowLight v3 still Low Light, when he is absolutely nothing like the first? and not that Low Light was a main character like Duke or something. I suppose that they found that figures that were made upon a character already existing in comics and cartoons sold slightly better... or the creators of those media complained about having to create every year a new roster of characters. And well, I hate the weapon tree, basically because they were repeating the same weapons over and over. The essence of GI Joe is specialized weaponry. I think the line got more focused for little kids and that was the beginning of the end.

The only figures I have from 1990-1992 are Undertow, Night Creeper, Slice and Dice, so even though it was starting to fall apart by that time, there were still a few figures I liked. But the vehicles were a hot mess after 1987 or so. There's still a few I don't even know, sometimes I'll get surprised on Yojoe.com.
Ironically, some of the coolest Joe stuff from the 90's came from the late 90's TRU stuff, and the ARAH 2 packs from 2000 |

I personally think the late 80s and early 90s figures had much better sculpts than the early to mid 80s figures. Sure they weren’t as realistic, but they just seem so much more solid.

92-94 sculpts are great and I am on record many times stating my affinity for the Battle Corps era because that is what I grew up with. I was able to get my own Beach Head, Dial Tone, Roadblock, Bazooka, Leatherneck, Gung Ho etc. |
