So I have taken the plunge to reclaim my childhood (what good is a college degree and a job if I can't buy back my toys). I have started to build my collection but have run across companies that will restore figures and re card them. I don't want to over pay for figures that look like they are mint on card but just restored and re carded. I also want to know how accurate the online price guides are. Thanks for any help you can give. Hopefully you will let me know and knowing is half the battle.

You just have to be vigilant, there are a few GI Joe recards out there, but not so much that you should worry about. Most reputable recarders will have "repro" somewhere visable on the card.
Plus if the price is too good to be true, it might be a recard. There's ways to spot recards too, you can see the tape edges or non waffle glue patterns. There are also some figures on cards that were never carded to begin with, like the vehicle drivers, or pilots. When in doubt, run them by us, we can do a little digging and research for you.

Some price guides are not very accurate. I would recommend looking up the item on eBay under sold completed auctions to get an idea of what something is worth. Be advised that condition and completeness can have a huge impact on the price, especially for items that are easily broken or with pieces that are easy to lose.
There are also variations of different figures that can raise the price significantly. There are online guides that you can consult to determine if a figure has a variation or not. If all else fails, ask someone. This is a pretty helpful and knowledgeable community. Best of luck with your collection! Last edited by Dem_Yoe'z!; 02-15-2019 at 02:28 PM.. |

Best price guide is eBay sold listings. Go to the ‘advanced’ tab on the upper right of the ‘search’ button. Search for anything and scroll down on the ‘advanced’ page to select ‘sold listings’ from the search including sub list

Also, just start off collecting what you like. Don't feel like you have to rush to get everything. Start with a few figures in mind that are your favourites. Then keep an eye on listings. Don't necessarily buy the first one that comes up; pretty much all figures have a fairly high rotation on eBay. There are very few truly "rare" ones so if you miss out on one, don't worry too much, another one will come along sooner rather than later.
