One thing that always bothered me: when the VAMP Mk II was released in 1984, the cover image and picture on the back featured a tan colored vehicle, along with a tan Clutch figure. All the marketing (catalogs and cartoons) featured the same tan color.
Yet when you opened the actual toy, what you got was a green-ish vehicle...and a mismatched, tan, Clutch figure. I remember when I got my VAMP MkII, I was expecting the light tan version...and almost cried when what I got didn't meet my expectations. I thought I had an error, or something. As a result, I didn't like my VAMP MkII as much as my original VAMP. Was there a reason for the color mix-up? Sure, there's the old disclaimer of "actual product may differ from what is shown". But it's odd that there was such a color difference...especially when Clutch was tan. (And yeah, I know that there was a 1988 mail-away version of the MKII that was actually tan).

Green-ish???
Damn repackers existed back then too? I actually liked the darker tan/brown colored one I had.

Not having a tan VAMP torqued me off. Especially when the back of the box said "designed for special desert operations" and showed both a tan VAMP and Clutch. By the time the mail-order tan VAMP version came along, I took a pass, as the Desert Fox had come out--and it was actually tan.

As a kid I didn't have the retail VAMP Mk. II, but I did have the mailaway one, so I had no idea the retail one was brown and not tan. Years later as an adult I saw a brown one at a comic shop and wondered how it got so discolored... then I read through yojoe.com and realized that was the actual color (and found out that mailaway vehicles sometimes had different colors than their retail counterparts). Anyway, I was hoping we'd get a tan repaint in the modern era after they released the brown one.
You raise an excellent question though, why was it tan everywhere (box, commercial, cartoon, etc) except the actual toy?
