Hi all. I just picked up a near complete, minus 3 vains, Killer Whale. A favourite from my childhood. I'm gonna start cleaning and restoring.
I'm just trying to find out if the original "finish" on this vehicle was glossy or more of a dull matte finish. I have another empty shell of a whale and I decided to try an experiment of using a bit of Novus fine scratch remover on a section of the body to see how it cleans up. This stuff made a really shiny glossy finish on the section I tried it on. It actually looks really nice and gleaming, but I can't remember if they came like this when brand new. I have a feeling they were more of a dull finish. I'm not sure if I should leave it matte, or shine it up with the Novus. Any one out there know of the original finish? I have included a picture of the shine that the Novus created |

I have two WHALEs; one 90% complete, the other about 50%. I noticed the skirts of both are very different as far as texture. The 90% is very matte, with a sort of rough feel, while the 50% is semi-gloss and far smoother. Wasn’t sure if this was from play wear or what, and I don’t know if the original skirting intentionally had that sort of textured matte finish. As far as the rest of the body, it’s pretty much the same between both. I will say that while I never had a WHALE as a kid, like most other vehicles, they didn’t have that high-gloss shine that you can get with Novus. There are some exceptions however, like the Night Raven which did seem very glossy in most photo ads at the time.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure the green plastic always had that frosted dull look to it. So I won't be breaking out the Novus on this one. I'll save that for my ACP restoration.
