So, I recently scored what I thought was a near-mint Claymore, as part of a larger eBay lot. On closer inspection, when comparing it to the one I already own, something is off here. Could I have an unknown variant here? I realize that the paint apps weren't 100% the same from factory-to-factory, and some slight variations are common and do not necessarily equate to a variant. Take a closer look here. The figure on the right is the one I already had in my collection, and it matches the picture on YoJoe.com. The new one, on the left, has several differences:
The pockets are green and not brown. The belt has less silver highlights. Also, the boots are painted solid green including the knife on the ankle. Maybe this was hand painted this way, but I don't think so. Why? The shade of green matches perfectly to the rest of the green used on both figures. Second, it's not sloppily done. Third, What would be the motivation? None of the other figures I got in that lot were painted, and this figure is near mint. Any extra information you all could provide would be appreciated, because Yojoe.com doesn't list any variants known of this figure. Thanks in advance. |

I would say the one without the knife and pockets painted is a factory error. All the ones I've seen have the pocket painted and knife painted.

Maybe one factory trying to cut costs? I mean, not only is it the pockets and knife, but also the silver on the belt and the brown straps on the boots. Crazy.

If either the knife were left unpainted or the pockets, I would say that you probably had a factory error. Missing paint applications were actually fairly common during ARAH. However both being left unpainted lends credibility to this being intentional and thus a variant. If the green pockets are actually painted green and not just missing a paint application, then that is for certain a variant (provided it was not done as a custom; if you use a jewler’s Loop or good magnifying glass, you can tell by looking for brush strokes).
The MB set was a low-production set to begin with, so if the factory made cost-cutting changes near the end of the run, it would make sense that this variant might not have been reported; there simply might not be very many of them out there. Edit: the fact that some of the silver paint applications on the waist are missing but the belt buckle is still painted almost certainly makes this figure a variant. Here's one I found on ebay with no spots/cammo. The one that you have is likely either a variant from right before the production run ended, or it might be a preproduction figure. Either way, it is definitely a great find! You might want to take some good close up pictures for Yojoe’s figure database in case it is confirmed to be a variant (now that you found this one, other people that previously weren’t aware of it might check theirs and discover additional examples) |

Looked again and found another difference that I didn't originally spot (and it doesn't show up in these photos). On the variant version, the chest above the shirt/below the neck is yellow, matching his clothes. However, on the normal version, it matches his skin color. Similar to the Serpentor variant. Very odd.

It all might depend on which batch and when it was made. I did a search and I found two more with the vest pockets not painted, but the neck is flesh tone and the one that shows the whole body, the knife on the boot is painted.
