Cool. I would guess between 25-50 complete sets exist out there, given several collectors have multiple sets of the figures. There may be significantly less complete sets of vehicles due to less collectors and less availability (requires more space to store and display, harder to find, more expensive to ship, plastic quality hasn't held up as well as the figures, less were kept mint condition over time by their original owners, etc).

I guess my question is what do you mean by complete? Mass market retail US figures and vehicles only.? I’m assuming we can use YOJoe as the rule book?
I’d wager more than you guys think. My collection is FAR from complete. My vintage collection focuses around my own childhood as I suspect many of us do, but from talking to fellow collectors here for the past decade it seems there are many vintage collectors. I doubt most of us have complete sets, but I’d guess 25-50 like Edgecrusher, and would not be at all surprised to learn that there may be more.

I have every figure from 82-94 MLC (also up to 89 on my second set for display) but need about 80 filecards. My vehicle list is down to 40 but I never really wanted to collect blueprints.

I used to have the entire vintage run of figures that were available in Canada. I had a lot of armies as well as I did a lot of customizing. My TF had all the unique foreign figures as well as a bunch of customs. My OG13 was more like OG25. Cobra blueshirts and 86 Vipers, CGs and the common army builders, I had like 30 each. Had the Flagg, Defiant and Terrordrome and most vehicles except the really small wind up ones. Never was really into the small vehicles. Got it all when I was depressed and ended up being addicted to getting the entire Joe run. Was in a lot of debt but my wife bailed me out. Some of you might remember me doing a huge selloff here. I wish I was able to keep the collection. Just wish i kept the Whale. It was absolutely mint cause i bought it MISB and assembled it myself.

My guess would be around 25-50.
But it is important to remember, that is not how everyone collects. There are many, like myself, who don't feel compelled to buy the things that they don't necessarily care for. My collection would not feel incomplete without a Cobra Rat or a Cobra Pogo... but that's me. I have a 75% complete o-ring figure collection and probably 40% complete 82-94 vehicle collection, and that is all from my childhood. I have not purchased any o-ring figures since 1994, and now only buy modern era figures. My 3 sons play with my childhood collection. When i think of my collection currently, i think about my Modern figures, not the totes that my kids play with. |
