My collection is centered around Modern Era Joes. To me a complete collection is a definitive version of each character made in the modern era, a strong troop built army, customs of 82-93 figures that have not been made in modern era, and the iconic vehicles from the 82-94 line.
But also Itchweed's, "I just make a list of what I want and what will fit in my 'verse and that's what I go for. My collection spans many lines and I'm not a completest in any." That more than anything. I think many purest wouldn't understand several customs I've made or the arrangement of many of my figures. However, it fits my 'verse.

All really great responses. I think I’m creeping up on satisfied myself and just want to focus on restoration. Something about bringing cast always and incomplete vehicles back to life that really inspires me to continue with collecting. I agree that heavy collections can creat clutter but can also be acquisition simply to fill a void. That momentary High is addictive and, at least in my case, can get a little out of control. Each post I read previous added new insight into my own collecting...thanks guys.

Basically I set goals, but still keep them flexible. O-ring figures from 82-86, but I also have delved into sub teams. Vehicles 82-86, but ME remakes can be included, plus there's some vehicles from 87-now that are pretty cool so they get included, also vehicles that that are too odd or cost prohibitive are omitted. Modern era my goal is to have the 82-89 figures, but anything that seems cool I pick up as well. Restoring classic vehicles and figures is also something I've really enjoyed lately. Learning to make molds and casts, plastic welding, fixing rivets. There's great satisfaction in making an old junker look relatively new again.
So I'm as complete as I want to be for now but not so complete that I won't stop looking.

I am looking forward to when i can display my collection.
My collection is centered around Modern Era Joes. To me a complete collection is a definitive version of each character made in the modern era, a strong troop built army, customs of 82-93 figures that have not been made in modern era, and the iconic vehicles from the 82-94 line. . So like you say the definitive version of each character is my goal. I didn’t need every version of v1 or v2 Snake Eyes or Storm Shadow ( though I feel like I had to buy them all before we got the Ultimates). Just the BEST of each figure and I may find that my BEST may be different than someone else’s. For example many folks have posted that the 50th Zartan is their go to, yet I prefer the Hall of Heroes for my display. In some cases Hasbros best was not good enough so I have resulted to customers (some are pictured in my Flickr link below). Like with my childhood I find the first chink in the armor around wave 6 or the 1987 line up. This falls apart more quickly for vehicles than figures but the figures soon follow suit. From 87 on I go for nostalgia rather than posterity, though I am now more open to hokey characters like Crystal Ball then my snobbish younger self. From 87-94 I find each year has less and less figures that I feel the need to have. And I do troop build but only Cobra and Grenadiers. I never saw any reason to troop build Joes. My Joe team is spec ops only, no green shirts. Pretty much 5 of each Cobra vehicle driver and any lesser troops. 10 each for the classic troops like Eels, Bats, Snow Serpents, Crimson Guard, Iron Grenadiers, and 20 Cobra Troopers, and Vipers. ( I am still chipping away at this mind you) Quote:
Complete means I own everything.
Every figure. Your figures. His figures. Everyone else's figures. All of the Star Wars figures. All of the G.I. Joe figures. All of the Boss Fight and Articulated Icons and Mythic Legions and He-Man and Transformer and Indiana Jones figures. All of them. When I am the only person in the world who owns action figures, that is complete.

I think my idea of complete is a bit unique. I mostly restore vehicles so I think of them as complete when I have all the parts, I don't include the figures if the vehicle came with one. For example I have a Defiant minus Payload and Hardtop and their accessories. In my eyes the Defiant itself is complete it just lacks the figures and the accessories that came with them. Now if I were to ever sell my Defiant which will never happen, I would not list it as complete because I know my version differs from the norm and is a personal point of view.
Now if the vehicle came with a figure when I purchased it to restore I'm more than happy to include it with the vehicle when it's finished and ready for display but again things like accessories don't phase me. If it's there it is and if it isn't it's no big deal to me. |

To me, "complete" is synonymous with "unattainable". That way lies only madness. I'll repeat what Itch said; "I just make a list of what I want and what will fit in my 'verse and that's what I go for. My collection spans many lines and I'm not a completest in any." I've come to accept that there are certain things I will probably never have, and to try not to fret over it; and, try not to get hung up on buying things "just because", or out of obligation, rather than because I actually like it.

I agree with you, no green shirts, but what i have done is built a Steel Brigade army. In my Joe Mythos, Steel Brigade members can graduate to the Joe Team, it's like the minor leagues for Joes. All Steel Brigade members are incredibly capable special operators, but they have not yet earned the honor to be a Joe. In the event of a global attack, they would be called in to assist Joes, and aid in auxillary support during special ops. I have around 50 Steel Brigade solidiers right now.
For me I consider myself a completionist in some sense. The only thing I don't feel the need to complete is all the ROC figures. For those i manly have focused on new named character like Speed Metel and Night Adder for example. I make customs of ARAH figures not produced in ME and have all the 25th and beyond ARAH iterations of characters (except ROC)I have some vehicles but don't feel the need to have them all. I do make sure I have all the vehicles from my childhood. I troop build cobra troopers in ME form also. I collect vintage ARAH all 82-88 and pic and choose after that. I find myself buying ME cobra trooper more than anything. I don't ever think my collection will be complete but I have been slowing down my purchasing as I acquire more and more. I think there will come a point where most of what I do is customize Last edited by zbs; 10-09-2018 at 10:39 AM.. |

Good question.
I don't think my collection will ever be complete, because my "rules" keep changing. When i first started collecting, i just thought i wanted a small group of my favourite characters. Of course, that quickly changed to me wanting the complete lineup of 1982-1987/1988, which to me are the "golden years". Lately, i've been thinning my collection, selling off all the figures i don't really have a connection to or use for. For example, i'll never have a USS Flagg, so bye bye Keel-Haul. And many of the '82 guys had to go, because i didn't have them as a kid, and i only ever knew them as motor pool crew (the danish Marvel run was #44 to #73). Now i just collect what i think is cool, and have even started modding and customizing what i have. |
