This thread died. Dang it. Really hoping there is someone out there experienced with scanning figures as I'm looking to buy a scanner and want some recommendations.

Decent models start at $10000. Personally, it wouldn't be easy for me to spend that kind of money. I would advise you to start scanning with Microsoft Kinect (check All3dp tutorials for this: 1 and 2. The only thing I wouldn't use Skanect software, I'd rather try a trial version of Artec Studio 13. 3D scans are better with it). |

I recently bought an Einscan SE and have been scanning toy parts for the past several weeks. The SE is between $1300 and $1500 depending on where you find it. I got mine on Ebay for $1200 (it was a weird situation where we went back and forth over an open-box one, and he eventually graciously offered me a new one at the open box price). I can get you the seller's name if you're interested.
Long story short, this thing creates incredibly detailed models for items in the six to eight inch realm and down to some pretty small stuff. For instance, I scanned a six-inch scale fist and it gave me a nice .stl to work with. Typically, I do two to three scans of the item. The SE consists of the scanner, on an arm attached to a rotating circular platform. I place the item on it, and I typically set it to take 70 photos. I hit go and it works on its own. It takes a photo, about three or four seconds, then rotates slightly, does it again. It can do between 8 and 120 rotations. Obviously, the more you do, the better the scan. Once the scan is complete, you can remove any stray points that may affect your final mesh. For instance, if you're doing a small hand with splayed fingers, due the size or the angle from which the pictures are taken, it may make some very slight errors and plot some points between the fingers. When the scan is done, you hold shift and draw a lasso around the points you want removed, and remove them. This is fairly rare though. I then rotate the item so the side that was down the first scan is up the second time. I scan again. When it's complete, it allows you to very simply align the two scans, which is completely automatic. Once this is done, you're usually in good shape. Sometimes I might want a third scan if the first two angles don't allow the camera to get every surface well, but even if there are a few small holes, the last step can typically fix them without a third scan. Once you're satisfied with your alignment, you mesh the item. You can choose to do a "waterproof" mesh, so it makes it a solid surface, or a "nonwaterproof" mesh, which you can edit further in 3d software. I always do waterproof. It takes about three or four minutes, and gives you a solid, detailed object, and then you can save it in several formats.

Also, the SE says it can scan and stitch items up to two feet in diameter, which I believe would require putting the scanner on a tripod and physically rotating the item yourself, since it obviously won't fit on the rotating base. I haven't tried this yet, but I intend to soon, because I have a full size football helmet I'd like to scan.
Also, you have to lay down taller items due to the way the scanner is angled downward. So if I want to scan a six-inch figure without disassembling it, I would lay it down, scan it, flip it over on it's stomach and scan it again. If you stand it up, it will only capture the bottom half. You could then try to stand it on it's head to get the top half, but that would be virtually impossible given the balancing.

Bump for a question...
So not scan related, but does anyone happen to have a WORMS antenna and a micrometer for some measurements? I was wanting to make a STL for some reproduction antennas, and don't mind making the file available for free after I've built one. |

I tried the tripod with my SP. Had some luck but gets frustrating. Just stuck to the turn table and reposition and doing the stitching Quote:
